When I was company driver, we slipped seats. Schedule changes gave us a different relief driver, big guy, who shifted rough. Shortly after we had gobs of slack in our 500K mi. truck. Wrenches pulled top cover, and found the forks were bent, along with other problems. Big guy had to take extended leave of absense, and when he came back was assigned to different (newer) truck. Sliding partner and I kept our truck till I left the company, no more shift problems.
Funny thing happened to that newer truck- after complaints of sloppy/hard shifting, top cover was pulled, and bent forks were discovered.
I see you mentioned the truck is recently purchased by you, if it was purchased used, possibly someone with bad shift habits drove it before.
When going down the road, I often find myself leaning back, reaching into the fridge for a cold drink. The way I do it puts pressure on the shifter, which can't be good for it; need to figure out another way to grab those Diet Cokes!Last edited: Nov 26, 2009

My last truck was missing the shifter isolater when they put me in it. There was so much play in the shifter that it would lay over on the driver seat. 1st and 6th were somewhere back in the sleeper and 4th and 9th where up out the right side windsheild. Even in gear there had to be a foot of play in either direction. You could not feel the gears at all. I drove that truck like that for months pulling a shotgun tanker and had that shifter down. When they finally fixed the shifter, it took me about a week to learn how to shift it. It turned into the smoothest truck I ever drove once I got used to it though.
