Day 1 done. Very informative. Signed my name more then I care to remember. They throw alot of info at you in this first day, but not more then you can handle. Start driving tractors only on Wednesday. They call it the Millis 500. We all drive circles around the yard. I cant wait.

I will keep you up to date. Ask any questions you may have and I will do my best to answer.

I have a question or two. Most of this thread seems to be geared towards new recruits so, is that what Millis prefers to hire (so they can train) or do they want experienced drivers too? I have 37 years in and am laid off from a large LTL operation. Also, what would be the pay range/ starting and top out for someone like myself. Thanks

They hire experienced drivers too. We had an experienced driver in our orientation the other day. I'm not sure what his pay was but I do know they gave him some seniority for being experienced. Their website has a graph with the pay scale based on experience. It will depend on if you go per diem or non per diem.

Do they put you up in a hotel while you are going through their school?

Thanks ScubaDoo. Definitely not per deim. That and lease purchase/ two of the biggest scams going. I'm waiting on callbacks from a couple other large LTL's but I may consider Millis if nothing comes thru in the next week or so. For truckload carriers they're on my top 5 list so far.
    Are you catching on allright?

    My $.02 ? :biggrin_25526:

Per diem is not the biggest scam people seem to think it is. There is a lot of discussion out there on this and for some it makes sense and others it does not. I believe ScubaDoo is going per diem and he has done a good deal of research. We have talked about this on the phone together, and with Millis' bonus and incentive pay (which appears to actually be reasonably achievable) - it can make sense to some people. - Again, everyone's financial situation is unique.

Some companies (such as Roehl) only offer per diem to any NEW drivers. In almost all cases, it certainly benefits the company, but in many cases the driver as well. When I hit the road, I likely will consider per diem. With Millis I think you can change but only after 1 year at either pay setup. Again, with Roehl, this isnt even an option. So before anyone shoots down per diem, you really really need to do the math with someone of tax code/law skills. Unless you really understand the tax codes, you can't make an accurate decision. Oh and knowing how to do a 1040EZ, doesnt qualify you in this case! :biggrin_25512:

Now, leasing is a whole another issue and you won't get a single argument from me on that..... :biggrin_2554:

Guys - just do the research and math. Ask more than one tax guy. Maybe even find someone close to your situation (married/single/wife works etc)..and see what decision they came up with. Per diem usually means more take home (and less taxes) but you loose the deduction at the end of the year. The one technical negative is if your looking to buy a home and your income (on your pay stub) can appear to be lower than it really is. But, if you have your W-2, I think there is a box that shows TOTAL compensation vs TAXABLE compensation - so any prudent banker can see the truth. But if you use a paycheck stub only, it looks as if your making less money...

Thats my personal take on this...and the way I understand it to be.
Maybe I have no idea what the #### I am taking about..

The only other thing I would add about Per Diem is it also affects how much you pay into Social Security, which will affect how much you collect at retirement age providing it is still solvent.
Sure wish I could have given Millis a shot.

Yes this is 100% true. Also I think disability and some other issues based against take-home pay. But will SS be around in the distant future?
I would hope so, but the way things are going...I have a feeling my kids are paying into a big black hole.

    :biggrin_2554:

Hey - why couldn't you give Millis a shot? Located in MI an issue right now?
Did you explore Roehl at all? - I like both companies for different reasons...
