Well I got my class a about a year ago. My company trained me the old way trained with a driver on my permit then took the road test. They put a rig together and I drove it from April till the end of July. I made about a dozen runs out to Baton Rouge, LA and helped the other driver out in the Fort Worth area. The company dropped us and I ended back in a class b tanker. My old rig was a 240 inch wheel base tractor with a 2000gal tank fabricated to it and the trailer was a 32 ft pup with another 2000gal tank. It was a strange looking set up. I have been driving straight trucks for over 20 years, but only a few months in an 18 wheeler. Are there any company's that will hire me ?

If you got company training but didn't attent a cdl/trucking school, you may have few issues.Call any starter company and see what they said, but more liking if you didn't attent trucking school, you may be out of gas.

AW , BS . Why would he want to call a training company ? NONE of the companies I have worked for cared anything about any certificate . I only know of one driver they hired that did have a certificate and he was by far the worst excuse for a driver I have ever seen . Once you've been out on the road for a few months your equal to or better than any newbie that spent time in school then time with a trainer . Jobs are scarce but there are plenty of companies that give little value to CDL mill training .

If you look around this forum there is alot of guys talking about having to go back to school cause they hadnt driven a combo vehicle in a while..I dont know of many companies that will take class b time and count it towards class a over the road time..I think alot of it has to do with insurance..Call around and see if maybe a refresher course would be somthing a company would accept as "schooling"...But I would check to see who would take you without first, and I would imagine you would probably have to go out with a trainer..

Approved schools are usually your overpriced truck driving schools that take you through an approved program of 5-6 weeks and cost anywhere from $2700 to $4500 for the priveledge. When you get to the school, you are usually greeted with the others in the class taking turns driving and doing inspections. After the training you say to yourself "why did I spend all of this money on this?".

There is a slowdown now in the economy, so its tougher to get that job. But just a few years ago, they would take anyone.

Avoid the approved school thing. What they are really looking at is your license. Many of the newbie companies put you with a mentor anyway.
