I’m about to purchase my first kitty cat. A 2006 kw w900 950k miles 18 speed. No major motor work done. Price is fair for the truck 35,000. What are some things I should be looking out for with this motor when I go to check it out. Some tell tell signs if you will. Please..... all help is good help

I believe it's normal for the acerts to have a good amount of blow bye. At that mileage be prepared for an overhaul in the future. It could go a long ways yet. Hard to tell. In stock form they aren't the best but they can be made into a real beast.

No miles for an 06. If it only ran 100,000 a year you are looking for over a million 5. Wonder what the ECM recorded mileage is.

It is a lot but I really don’t want a long nose. And it worse comes to worse I want to do a engine swap and go 3406 or 60 series

My acert likes to eat turbo studs every few years.
My acert didn't have acert problems (VVA's) until 350,xxx miles, yes it's low miles but yes it's a dump truck.
The serpentine belts on the front tend to go through pulley bearings and belts themselves much quicker than my V belt Cat's.

Driving it in stock form it feels like a leaned out pig. Everyone I've talked to who has played with them says you can make them run good.

All in all I don't care much for them but I'll still take a Cat over brand x any day but I'm biased and that's just my opinion.

    BoxCarKidd Thanks this.

The acert is a 3406 but better, with a little extra junk bolted onto it. If I was looking to build a cat it would begin with an acert.
And don't believe what everyone says the twin(compound) turbos aren't the problem.

I have a set of acert compounds bolted up to my 6nz and really like them

Broken turbo and exhaust manifold studs, idler pulleys, VVA problems/codes, pre cooler hoses rubbing/leaking behind the lower turbo and last but not least head gasket replacements where a lazy or incompetent mechanic didn't measure liner protrusion.

Get rid of iva , overhaul it and keep the way it is . Acerts are good engines and i heard multiple times they stronger and better than 6nz everyone is crazy about.
When done properly and in right hands it will run like raped monkey . I had one in w900 converted to single turbo ...mpg sucked though

Don't forget to drop compression ratio.

Think those Pete headlights are why your MPG sucked
