I have a friend that does does with flatbeds. The last time I talked to him he was making $17.5 hauling steel. He left the airport to work at that job about 6 months ago, he is the one pushing me to get my CDL now.

I think the level of pay, van/reefer/flatbed depends on what you haul. Talk to someone who runs coast to coast reefer produce (isn't it all) and they generally make the top end, followed by flatbeds then dry van. One thing left out of all discussions is the bedbuggers. It's murderous work, but, when the economy is good, an exp. well liked bedbugger can make a killing. I know two who only work 8 mos. out of the year and pretty much sit or pick and choose for the other 4 mos. The downside, if your not a people person, don't bother.
