Last night I had something that doesn't happen all that often and wanted to know what you all think? Stopped a trucker for speeding, 17 over the limit. Log book was behind, last entry at 0500 hours on the day of the stop. It was now 2330 hours. Where he was at 0500 hours and at the time of the stop was a good 14 hour drive. Bunch of lights on truck and trailer out. No fire extinguisher. The low air device was inoperable, etc..etc. etc. etc. while I'm talking to this "professional" driver and inquiring about his log book, he begins to question everything, and I mean everything I'm doing. "I want to see the radar! I want to know this and I want to know that." To the point I had enough of his B.S. After quite a few tickets for a few thousand dollars he finially did shut up. Have any of you ever acted like this guy and what was the outcome? I've been doing trucks over 10 years now and I have only encountered a few arse's like him and they have all been from south Florida. Anyway stay safe out there and have a good holiday.:biggrin_2555:

I refer to those types as "Know-it-alls". They are the ones that run afowl of the law, get caught, then challenge the cop. Usually they start with "that's unconstitutional" etc. Big blabber mouths, they're at any truck stop at the counter, or on the C.B. radio telling the whole world how knowledgeable they are. This guy you stopped last night will tell everyone how he "put that smokey in his place". But, you know better, right? Kind of interesting, that from Fla statement.

    I always question authority
Way to many times the police (DOT) being burned out or just jerks
Abuse the citizens they pull over
Some times we just get sick of being treated like crap as much as you guys do
    But you have the power
In my experience the longer a officer has been in service (years) the better chance of getting a raw deal
Sorry my rant isn't at you necessarily but I can hear your loathing for this driver in your post
Its just this type of situation that makes cops look down on all drivers and how they treat them, and the very reason there is so much apathy for professionalism in the enforcement

Most of the local bears around here are pretty easy to get along with, so I have only had a problem once! Rookie cop that wanted to give me a ticket for "impeding traffic"... (I was going 20 in 25 zone that was LOADED with 9-12 year olds!)

Other than that, every cop I have ever run across has been very helpful. Including the poor guy who stopped me when I had food poisoning and I threw up on his boots! I drove off after he handed me the ticket, and left my entire wallet with him! (Oops!) He had another officer help hunt me down to return my wallet, and then followed me home....

I have so many friends in law enforcement I just couldn't be a total jerk to one, unless the officer got out with an attitude...

DB, just do your job, and don't let the jerks get you down! You're out there to help keep our roads safe, and those of us who care about our safety appreciate it.

In 47 years on the road, I guess that I have been stopped around 7 or 8 times and only 2 tickets and the last ticket was back in '78. I have several "friends" who are retired troopers and one in particular told me that 9 times out of 10 his mind was not made up when he approached the driver, unless it was outrageous. He said that the attitude of the person went a long, long way. This retired trooper told me that when you are stopped, most of the times the trooper will say, "do you know why I stopped you?", your response should be, "no sir, but I know you must have had a good reason". In this manner, you are not creating a "conflict" nor admitting any guilt, you are giving the trooper proper respect and it goes a long way.

Had a Florida trooper tell me that it is becoming more and more diffuclt to deal with a motorist. He said, he had 23 years on the force and two more and he was out of it.

Oh, was told by a Va. trooper, never call a trooper, "officer", he said a deputy or a local might be an officer, but in Va. you go through six months of pure hell and "we are troopers".:biggrin_25514:

I have always found that a little "humor" thrown into the conversation is like honey and sugar. Oh, I know that there are some that you cannot "kid" with, but I give it a try anway.

I agree with Grouch. Attitude is everything anymore. And I can guarantee, if that was my hubby you had stopped, you would have not gotten that kind of an attitude from him. Its called respect. Don't let this yahoo throw you for a loop. I've read plenty of your posts on this board, enough to know that you treat people the way that you would expect to be treated.

There are bad apples in all walks of life, and you my friend are not one of them.

LMAO! My husband used to go to this one warehouse in Washington, and there is one set of scales right there near the warehouse.. well, there is always this one young lady operating that scalehouse.. She and my husband became friends after him running through there 4 times a week... It got to where she brought homemade doughnuts on the days she knew he was coming through and he would stop and get coffee.. The first time I rode up there with him, she redlighted that truck and then ran out to meet me!! I got a big hug, and "Oh, I've heard so much about you!!"

He gets along with almost any LEO he ever meets...

Baack, I wasn't loathing for the guy. I have my mind made up when I stop someone whether they are getting a ticket or warning. And like someone posted, I will change depending on attitude. There are certain violations I write tickets for and only tickets. I don't look down on driver's because of one Jack a s s. I try to be as fair as I can to each driver. I've seen the driver side, grew up around it, and I see the enforcement side as well. In the end I have a job, just like the driver has a job to do. It just amazed me with this fellow how he reacted. Without the attitude he would have gotten a speeding ticket and a warning for the other violations.
