Forty years ago there was a tractor trailer every ten to fifteen miles or more. Twenty years ago there was a tractor trailer every minute. Today there are three to five rigs every second. The interstates are so crowded even at three in the morning. Every company hires more and more drivers every day.
The fuel islands at truck stops used to be 75% empty most of the day just six years ago. Today there are lines of trucks in every fuel lane 24/7.
Forty years ago rest areas were ghost towns at night. Today a rest area with twenty truck parking spaces have over fifty trucks in them. Every time a new trucking parking facility opens up, it’s overcrowded right away.
I've been driving tractor trailers since 1977 and plan on retirement within weeks. But when I leave, I’ll be replaced with ten thousand drivers. Or am I underestimating. Good luck with the long lines and severe competition.
It’s getting too crowded

Good luck on your retirement plans. My husband has officially retired as of Nov 2020. His arthritis is bad in his back and has to have cataracts removed in the future. It is really a change after working since he was 16.

CB usage is down, but it is nice to get ahold of a trucker if you see a problem on their truck, and if there is road problems of any type. I wish I had one in my car again. We used them in AR a lot in our younger days almost 50yrs ago, people beat the long distance phone charges back then by using them to talk to friends. Not having to use them at a shipper/receiver is a lot better though, you can actually go to sleep and not worry about missing a call for your load. Progress

I remember in 2000 driving on i75 south I stopped in Florence, KY there was still a lot parking available at around 9 pm. I'm hearing that you would have to be at truck stop before 8 pm in order of obtaining a reasonable if any at all. Most traffic on the roads after 2 am are only trucks.

Young people as a whole want nothing to do with otr and I really wonder where they are going to find drivers in the future ?
Say what ya want but the otr segment of the industry is in trouble and I don't see rates going down.
If they want drivers they are going to have to start paying them .RubyEagle, spsauerland, Doealex and 5 others Thank this.
