That's about all that's necessary.
Git-er-dun.
Thar ya go, Znine, confusin' 'em with the facts. They ain't interested in the facts. They're only interested in appearing to actually be doing something about a problem that wasn't a problem before they made it a problem that they now think they've solved.![]()

I know but that is the problem with peoples thinking. Something goes wrong and they go crying to the law makers as if there are not enough laws already. We need laws for safty but not to tie people in knots.:smt117

I agree.
What really sizzles my bacon is, as a result of a Big Truck vs automobile crash that was determined to be the fault of the Big truck truck driver, based on an investigation that was conducted by local authorities, the incident drew media attention because the occupants of the 4 -wheeler were related to someone high up in politics.
That caught the attention of a few special interest groups like M.A.D.D., P.A.T.T. and C.R.A.S.H., who then jumped on the bandwagon with their agenda for making the highways "safer" by getting tough on Big trucks, citing the recent incident as a clear indication of the need for stricter rules for Big trucks and their drivers.
Considering that the crash in question was more of a fluke that would probably not happen that way again if no new laws were enacted, what resulted amounted to a knee-jerk reaction that in reality not only didn't improve anything, but actually created a situation that is worse safety wise than the problem claimed to have been eliminated. However, the special interest groups, although not completely satisfied, considered their efforts to be a success. They were instrumental in making changes. Never mind that it created another problem as bad or worse than the one claimed to be eliminated, --- to them it's the thought that counts, not so much the actual results. And they felt all warm and fuzzy, touchy feel-good about the difference they'd made.
Another example, --- exhaustive tests were conducted with school buses to determine how they might be made safer if involved in a crash. They used dummies with sensors, sensors on the bus, computer programs and all the modern electronics to record impact and everything else to determine what's the safest method.
Going into the tests the general opinion was that the tests would show the advantages of seat belts for all the students instead of wearing no seat belts. To their surprise, it was the other way around. The belted dummies received more severe injuries than the un-belted dummies, usually broken pelvis and hips and/or serious head and whiplash injuries.
As a result of those findings it was decided that using seat belts wouldn't make for safer conditions, and the idea was scrapped.
Now fast forward about 15 years. A terrible crash involving a loaded school bus occurs. Not an ordinary crash, more like another fluke that probably wouldn't happen that way ever again.
But it MIGHT!
And knees jerked again, demanding changes be made to improve safety for school buses. A noble cause if ever there was one.
But what to do?
Then the idea of installing seat belts was suggested.
I thought, No way fools! Tests have already proven that seat belts in school buses are a disaster causing worse injury than wearing no belt at all. They'll reject that idea for sure.
I was wrong.
They decided seat belts were the obvious answer. No tests, and obviously no research either. The order was to install belts in all the school buses, ASAP & PDQ.
Had they done any research they would have discovered that the tests indicate that the safest way to transport kids in a bus was to have the seats facing the rear of said bus, and that seat belts made matters worse. Yet the special interest groups involved were content that their involvement improved safety when it actually did the opposite. But they "felt good" because they made a difference. Never realizing that in reality not only did they failed to attain their objective, they set safety back instead of advancing safety forward.
Then, when they're questioned about their decisions, pointing out that those decisions weren't exactly the wisest, all things considered, their reply is something like,
Well, at least WE try to make a difference by making things safer for everyone.
Adding, .......... What are YOU doing to improve and promote safety on the highways, ....... if ANYthing?
Now see, right about there they expect me to hang my head as I admit to doing nothing, but I don't. Instead I look 'em in the eyeballs and mention how I average around 120 ---> 130 miles a year in a Big truck, and during those years I've managed to put over a million mile-markers in my back pocket. All without a DOT preventable, and without a single moving citation in any vehicle in the past 30+ years. I've attended safety courses and defensive driving classes several times during those years to maintain an edge, and as a driver trainer I drum safety into each and every trainee assigned to me, as well as anyone else who'll listen.
I know what I'm doin' works. The proof is in the puddin'.
And as far as the general motoring public's well being and safety goes, I've done more to avoid disaster as a result of bone-headed moves by auto drivers, ....... that they're not even aware of most of the time, ...... than putting them in harms way in ANY way as a result of my actions. Of course I receive a reaction after my action avoiding a collision with those types.
They flip me the bird for my efforts.
Go figure.
If I don't get flipped-off at least a couple of times a week, I figure I'm doin' something wrong, and seek a solution pronto.
Safety Is No Accident.

rookietrucker Thanks this. -
After Shock there are a million stories out there on knee jerks. I think the special intrest are not looking for that warm fuzzy feeling. I think they want to make a name for themselves, get even, and even hope for tragaties to happen for reason to push agendas. Also its a job thing as well because no one wants the pink slip after a job well done which causes them to keep making suff up.

Have you EVER unloaded a dollar general load? It's a lot harder than it looks. Now, I'm not a dollar general driver, but one time I had one blocking a trailer I was picking up at a yard, he had two trailers backed up together, consolidating those cages full of empty cardboard boxes into one trailer. So I'm a nice guy and i would've been really bored if i just waited, so I jumped in, asked what he was doing, told him the problem, and asked if i could help....He sure perked up when i asked him that!
Anyway, the rolltainers as they are called, are a huge pain in the butttt. They get stuck together, etc, and when they get stuck, they can be pretty labor intensive to get them back apart!
That said, I couldn't even imagine a 400 lb guy doing dollar general. I hope you were exagerating. And besides that, I couldn't imagine a 400lb guy doing dollar general and *staying that size*. Myself, I would do it without complaining. Now, some of the places they have to get the truck into...i'd rather unload the rolltainers than back it in THERE!!

your talking about the crash here in ky i would belife on I 71 ML 75 i think

I doubt that's the one . That was church bus , not a school bus . That one resulted in regulations requiring school buses be fueled by diesel , not gas .
