I have been heavy my whole life. went to basic training at 5’10” and 235 lbs at 17
4% body fat graduated 241 lbs and even less body fat. Now almost 4 decades later
Hovering around 300 lbs. I eat healthy,
I can walk for miles and have no health issues. I am a walking contradiction to doctors. Feel good at my weight -
Not to offend you, but you must mean a type 2 diabetic. Type 2 is based on diet and your body still makes insulin. It just doesn't regulate it properly due to improper carb control.
Type 1 is an autoimmune disease. Your pancreas doesn't make insulin. It doesn't matter what your diet is. You will always need insulin. Of course eating to many carbs is also not good for a type 1.N00bLaLoosh, Still undecided, '88K100 and 1 other person Thank this. -
you are possibly correct however recently he’s now been told he has type 1.5 diabetes which I had never heard of.

Type 1.5 diabetes is LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults). It is a slow progression of type 1 diabetes that develops in adulthood. It usually appears in ppl over 30 that are at a healthy weight and have no factors for type 2 diabetes.
If your son has Type 1.5 diabetes he will eventually need and become insulin dependent. Can take months to years. Right now he is what is called a honeymoon stage. (I called it my hell stage when I was going through it). My BS were all over the place during this stage. Some days I couldn't stay above 50 no matter how many carbs I ate. Other times I couldn't get it under 200 even with insulin and diet, or I would have mixed days.
His body is making small amounts of insulin right now. As his immune system attacks his pancreas it will quit making it all together. -
Insulin in made and secreted by the beta cells of the Pancreas, the Islet of Langerhans to be specific. But otherwise you're correct, I'm impressed with the knowledge here. Maturity Onset Diabetes of Youth and Alzheimer's possibly being Type 3 Diabetes are other types that haven't been mentioned yet, Diabetes is more complicated than it seems at first.Jenn72 Thanks this.

In my case, it was the school of hard knocks. I had to learn how to manage my diabetes. What is so dang frightening to me is the many people that have diabetes and it's raging out of control. Same with blood pressure!Still undecided and Jenn72 Thank this.

You are correct. I didn't want to get to technical and get people confuse. I try to keep it KISS (keep it short & simple)
Just like it's carb counting that's important. Ppl don't realize fruit has a lot of carbs but most meat has zero. -
Don't feel bad. My husband belongs to the hard knocks club too

My endocrinologist warned me about meats. I mentioned that process called Gluconeogenesis she told me about. This process will produce glucose from what is considered noncarb foods like some meats. I have watched my blood sugar on my Dexcom system rise from the upper 90s to almost 140 just eating 2 scrambled eggs with a small baked hamburger steak. This physician preaches about carb intake, but she also warns about the other foods not thought about as high carb!
Jenn72 Thanks this.
