Hey all,
can someone send me a picture of their low mount (stinger) 5th wheel that can slide back / forth. I'm trying to understand how the mechanism works and what to look for to confirm if a truck has it or not. Am I looking for the same pin and key setup found on high mount trailers like the picture below?

It works the same as any sliding 5th wheel I have ever seen. Look for the air line and the switch on the dash. Really the only difference is that a stinger fifth wheel sits almost on the ground instead of on top of the frame rail, but it works the same. It does look slightly different without the visible teeth
as it is generally a fully forward or fully to the rear fifth wheel.

It depends on the setup. Some have regular sliding fifth wheels some have a sliding kingpin.
and the 80’ that I drive has neither. It’s a fixed kingpin and fifth wheel.Banker Thanks this. -
I didn’t like the look of the kingpin as it looks like a damage waiting to happen.BigBob410 Thanks this.

The one I had at Virginia was a sliding kingpin. As long as it was greased I never had a problem with it. I always made sure it was engaged though. It seemed a little sketchy to me at first but I never had an issue. Does your new trailer have the fixed kingpin?
-
Yes it will be a long tongue fixed. The plan is to slide my fifth wheel back and never slide it forward unless I get in a tight spot I can’t get out of. That should give me the 80’ total length.BigBob410 Thanks this.

The one I have now is the long fixed also. I have to use the small flippers on the back of the tractor or I can’t make the transition.Banker Thanks this.

Yes my plans are that also. My friend has a tractor very similar to mine with a 14” fixed porch and his trailer meets it perfect. With my Chicken Lights on the back of the tractor I can’t have the folding porch and since I am all about vanity, I am good with the fixed porch and keeping the Chicken Lights! LolBigBob410 Thanks this.

What is this terrible rumor I hear about your employer running off a bunch of hard working carhaulers? Is there a new bean counter in town that doesn’t fully understand the ego, of us carhaulers? We ain’t taking no BS!
BigBob410 Thanks this. -
At this point brother you probably know more than I do. I been out on W. C. For about 3 months. Hoping to get back out there soon. Supposed to have surgery on the 10th. What have you heard?
