Yea one time in the 90's a customer told me the reason for lumpers to unload the freight was because they only paid for the freight to be moved from point a to point b, not for the actual loading or unloading process. I told him he was wrong, that the reason for lumpers was so there company didn't have to pay wages an benefits for them to have their own dock workers.

 

a lot of shippers now have direct bill for lumpers where the receiver bills the shipper directly
