I have the option of purchasing a KW with a stage III big cam 400 or a KW with a 460 N14. Will be used for logging. Will usually be between 80-90k when loaded. Hilly terrain in the Carolinas. I about know what to expect with the N14.... Anyone here ever used the old 855's for logging? Both engines are in great shape ...

Well, not for logging, but I had BC's in my trucks, and most company trucks and I'd think they would be perfect for logging. Seems a BC runs out of steam on the highway, but for off road operations, can't be beat. A lot of JD farm equipment, like combines, use BC's ( painted green, of course) without a hitch. Not sure about N series, but I'm a BC follower till the bitter end.

I'd go with the N14, the big cam just doesn't have the grunt I would want for that sort of weight off road.
spsauerland and Big Road Skateboard Thank this. -
What type of transmission and rear end ratio ? For logging work those are just as important as the engine.spsauerland Thanks this.

Transmission is a 10-speed eaton fuller. Can't get any info on the rear ends. The truck was shipped from the manufacturer as a rolling chassis. Someone put the engine in drivetrain on it at a later date. The current owner can't find a stamp on the rear end anywhere telling him the ratio. N14 has a 13-speed 370s on the rear. I'm also looking at freightliner with a 435 Detroit 12.7 series with a 10-speed and 3:55 on the rear... That Freightliner is appealing because it only has 160,000 original miles. One owner.

JMO.. but if I were looking to make it a logging truck I would want a 15 or18 speed trans...maybe a 13.. I would want 3:90 or 4:11 rears on 24" rubber.. thats just as important as the motor to me
From your choices your listed the only 1 that might interest me would be the N14 with the 13 sp & 3:70s..
I wouldn't even consider the freightliner just because of how it's set up.. thats a highway truck onlyBigRigBillyTrucking, spsauerland, Roberts450 and 1 other person Thank this.
