Hours of Service question.

@Cattleman84 explained, if you are not doing on-duty activities, you don't want to be on-duty as that may burn your 70 hour clock. 20 minutes for 6 days will be 2 hours on the 7th. That could be the difference between making a delivery or having to wait until Monday to deliver.

 

Doing split sleeper you can get away from 30 min break.Drive 5 hours - 2 hours off duty or sleeper, drive 6 hours - 8 hours sleeper.

 

It is saving you time on your 70.

 

Yeah he's trying to maximize your 70... By cheating. Most likely that kind of stuff will never get caught unless its in an audit, and even then getting caught is iffy. Just do what ya got to do to get through training and get your own truck. Then log it as it happens and do it legal.

 

As said it's saving on the 70. Even if he's an idiot. I'd personally let your company know. Because the reasons you say he's putting you off duty is wrong and he's teaching really bad habits.

Your 14 hour on duty clock starts the second you do any work. (Drive/on-duty) it keeps running from the moment it starts. Split birth rules pause it.

Your 70 hour work clock doesn't run constantly. It's only reduced by the time you spend on the drive and on duty lines. That's why you want to be either off duty or sleeper when you are not working.

Example: You pull into Love's to get fuel. You're on the drive line as you pull up. Change to on duty while fueling. Off duty when you go inside to use the restroom, grab a drink and that roller dog that you're going to regret in an hour. Then back to the drive line when you leave.

 

He was probably more worried about his own hours. If you don’t have your CDL he needs to be on duty at all times while you are driving. Plus some guys just get really nervous around cops.

 

Don't think of any clock as paused. Except for the 14. It's the only one that is always going once the workday begins.

Your 11 only counts down when you are on the drive line.
Your 70 only counts down when you are on either the drive or on duty lines.

If you exercise common sense. You'll never have to worry about a log inspection.

If you're moving. You're on the drive line. If you're working. You're on the on duty line. If you're effing around outside the truck. You're on the off duty line. If you're sitting on your bunk. You're on the sleeper line.

I recommend sitting on your bunk anytime you are waiting at customers. Click will pair if it goes over 2 hours.

The main thing. Don't be on the drive or on duty lines unless you are working.
