Opinions and thoughts on trying to obtain a driving job through local temp agencies? Seen several of these jobs advertised in my local area, just wondering if anyone has ever wandered down that road. Im kind of guessing some or most are for seasonal stuff, but just figure Id inquire here..

Do you really want a temp agency with their hand in the pot before you eat?

Nothing wrong with temp agencys. The best job I ever had was through a temp agency. It started out as fill in for 1 week vacation. Turned into a 10 year gig, at which time I quit. Pay is a little less than normal, the employer is charged a premium rate for not having to process in a new hire. Advantages are you have work if you get a good recomendation from the employer you worked for. You don't have to be top notch, so to speak, because you are a temp and not familiar with that companies procedures and they understand. They are just happy to have a fill in driver for the day/week and really don't expect miracles. And if you hate the job, you can refuse the assignment from the agency, since you are there on a daily basis. If you like the job, you can possibly slip in at the next opening. But, you have to be adaptable, since you will be thrown to the wolves in a strange truck and given an assignment to deliver who knows what. Can you say "adventure"?

Thanks, Im currently going down these roads right now. My time with wonderful Large company ended abruptly, days before Christmas... Starting to search for smaller companies now, fingers crossed.
Also wondering how the DAC report works in regards to working for a smaller company. If they don't use the DAC report during your hiring process, then Id assume they have no interest in reporting your employment on the report either... So, if you go back to a larger carrier or need to switch jobs, how does that carrier give you credit for your last position? -
crazyeyes, just like how they verified that i worked at an animal hospital for 6 months!

OH SCREW DAC! DAC/HireRight is for companies to see what your record was. When you fill out an application the company you are filing with has the option to use DAC/HireRight but I would NOT worry about having a record with them unless you really screwed up or your last company put false information on your record which seems to be the biggest problems with little minded people in a big job making life hard on the actual workers in this industry! As for a smaller company? Don't sweat it if they don't report to that bottom feeder DAC! If there is a missing spot in your employment report then your filing company just has to do a little extra work and call the smaller company! If they only rely on DAC and are to freaking lazy to pick up a phone and CALL the company in question then you need to RUN AWAY very fast and find a better company to work for!
Chill about DAC/HireRight! -
I have to say as a manager for a newly formed Transportation staffing agency, I believe our industry has gotten a bad rap. Our company is trying to change that. We try to deliver quality professional, class A drivers that love what they are doing, we also believe that drivers are to be respected, The trucking industry is the backbone of this country, without it the world doesn't move. Our customers deserve the same respect. Not that anybody is doing it here but drivers please know that there are agencies out there that are focused on you. Sorry if I seem to be rambling, I am just passionate about what we do here.

What I bolded.
You are correct, you got a bad rap, and rightfully deservingly, so.
I had applied (and was hired on) by a "temp agency" strictly for drivers, last year.
I was told that a BIG, HUGE, MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR a year carrier was starting up a whole new account, and NEEDED DRIVERS ASAP..!!
I was told the account "would start soon". I was given a pre-employment drug screening.
The job never materialized.
The "temp agency" kept calling me prior to this non-existent job, for "other driving jobs".
I told them to "go pound sand", that "YOU HIRED ME for a specific client".
Sometimes a temp agency is the only way for a newbie to get a job. Sometimes a temp agency is the only way for an experienced driver to get a job, in a tough economy.
No matter how hard things get for me in the future, all temp agencies can go pound sand.
