What would YOU want in a job in trucking?

    Granted, and I appreciate that. Scope is wide at this point, but focus would narrow down as things progress. Hence the reason I asked this question. I run a few other companies currently, and this is an industry that interests me. Business is business across the board - it's the finite details of the industry that differentiates between a carrier and a manufacturer, or a grocery store. I'm not naive enough to think I'll be running everything everywhere. DoD is a focus because that's what I know after working logistics in the military - but we'll certainly be narrowing in on a particular customer base on the commercial side and become very good at that, and I'm sure by nature that won't result in being "everywhere."

    I believe in taking care of my people, and that means listening to them. So far I've been very inexperienced in everything I've set out to do at first - everyone is inexperienced at one point in their life at every single thing - and I've been very successful by following a very small set of core beliefs - and number one is listening to and following the advice of those who know a hell of a lot more than I do.

    Signed direct freight contracts. Got it.

    Well, you’ve got some perspective and what sounds like a real network; which is two things most guys (myself too at one time)with your idea lack.

    Businesses are transactional. The cost to get the ability to transact - profitably and efficiently- in trucking is higher and….tougher to take than in most industries. In your money plan, figure out what seems like unreasonable or bad luck operating costs and add 20%. That requires an operating reserve to hedge against. The amount of diverted or stagnant capital/money requires just to stay safely operating is a real hard pill to swallow for most investors looking into the business.

    I was Leased to a company for 7 or 8 yrs. I had a dedicated D&H 400 trip each way. 6 trips per week. 7 if I wanted. I never saw them. Maybe once a yr. at most. Sometimes not for a couple yrs. I really liked that. Stayed out of the Company Drama, and BS Talk that Drivers love to do. Just minded my Own. Never kept a Job that long. Worked good at the time. Never too far from home. I’d have dinner at home twice during the week. Weekends off. It beat working 60 hr weeks Local, on the clock. Less hustle, better pay.

    personally i was never a "party person", and could care less about those.

    i'd rather have the money instead. (as in a Christmas bonus)

    but maybe once a month during the summer and fall, maybe a hotdog cook out, as long as EVERYONE is home when this takes place. one employer i was at, had such a "cook out", but i was far away when that happened (as well as some other drivers) and we were (in my opinion over looked).....not good in my book on treating a driver that earns the company money, with respect.

    all get to attend, or none at all.....as to me, that is favoritism.

    There’s also a guy on YouTube named David McGill that regularly puts out videos with advice

    he’s an accountant that started a trucking company on the side .
    Called “trucking from scratch “
    He’s not driving , he is running the company .

    He has some good info and unlike most truckers , isn’t afraid to share it . He’s not terrified someone will use what he’s learned and cut into his business .

    If you do all lower 48, add a bonus to the northeast(anything east of 81 and north of 70)
    City pay, companies seem to pay extra to go into NYC and long Island, but I'd add any city in the north east plus Chicago, Atlanta, Dfw, Houston and LA.
    When a driver wants hometime, get them home when they want to be home.
    Good network of drop yards/terminals. I get this might be hard for a small, starting company, but I like knowing I have a safe, legal place to park with at the very least a bathroom.
    Most of what else I consider important has been mentioned by others.
