I’ve given one week notice at my last two jobs. The last one complained about me not giving two weeks. I pointed out they didn’t give me two weeks when they changed the pay structure causing me to lose over 5000 in income. They didn’t give me two weeks notice when they pulled my helper off of my Friday route. I pointed out they have been trying to hire more drivers for the last six months and haven’t hired one. What would one extra week do. And I said you didn’t mind when I gave only one week notice at my last job before starting here. So do you want one week or not? They said one week would be great.

I have always told new job I would give 2 weeks notice, and if they wanted it, would work it.
If they say: Well, you go now, then I will be here ready to work the next morning.
Always worked out well for me; for a couple of them, not so much.
Disclaimer: My experience was way back, and most companies then knew the caliber of competitions hires. Also, company drivers talked with each other, and you could get a decent read on the openings. It was not uncommon to meet a driver and in conversation advise you wanted to change, and he might later contact you to say 'You ought to come by our place and talk with my boss". He told me he could use a good man. The fix was in, you just visited and completed.
Also; back then, different companies competed on different services. Everyone did not specialize in van, tank, reefer, and flat.
Usually stuck with 1 or 2 segments in his shippers areas and provided real service.Lonesome and Vagabond82 Thank this. -

Where I work I’ve been for 3 years. I remember in my early days there guys would give 2 weeks notice and the company seemingly would take it personally and tell them just go now.
But now with this tight labor market the last guy I know that quit told me they were crying to him about not giving 2 weeks notice and he told them about previous drivers who would do so only to be immediately shown the door. Company would act like a 13 year old girl who got stood up for junior prom.
This may present a difficult decision as I may well be resigning soon and I have to decide if I try to be all professional and give 2 weeks or if I should just send them an I quit email and drop my uniforms off at the guard shack.Gearjammin' Penguin, Lonesome, bentstrider83 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Too much gaslighting and guilt tripping you into staying when it comes to putting in a notice. Better to jump to the other job and be sure it's going to work out. Give yourself no reason to go back to some place you left.

At my last interview was asked when I could start. Said two weeks and the boss said good, if you told me any less I wouldn't hire you. Says if you won't give two weeks to come here that means you won't do the same for me.

I would talk to my new employer to be and outline the situation. Clarify: if give notice and hung out, what is his feelings?
Would he prefer you just quit with no notice. Might get some good intelligence on how things will be with him.Lonesome and Shackdaddy Thank this.
