Proper or improper securement of this pickup on step deck?

Lolno....not only no but HELL no. The brakes on that truck fail and its going to roll all over the place and torque the hell out of the straps and likely break them, or cause damage to the rims at a minimum. Vehicles have tie down points for a reason. Using a basket (over wheel net designed to hold the entire wheel) would likely be ok as well though on a pickup unless its a half ton id be iffy at best for that in most cases.

If you wanted to do what this guy is doing as ADDITIONAL securement incase something fails or to avoid excessive movment if the brakes ARE bad then sure maybe especially if you had something to protect the rim. This is just asking for problems and i have seen a few vehicles fall off trailers with this kind of securement.

 

The regs are really specific on vehicles. You have to use the slots in the frame designed for tiedown, or Straps over or around the TIRE.

My guess is he only has flat hooks on his straps, so he can't even do the trick of running chains on either side of the tire for strap anchor points in line with tires

 

I still see various car haulers strapping through the wheels. It is beyond irritating as car dealers began checking wheels for EVERY car hauler because a few are hard headed. A local BMW/Mercedes dealer where I used to live insisted on coming out to the trailer when their used cars arrived because wheels were coming in scratched.

 

But we're the ######## for calling them out for doing it.

 

I know most of the new car manufacturers won’t even let you use the lasso type straps. And yeah thru the rim is a definite no. He could have gone around the tire or hooked into the frame.

 

I have seen worse with new fords on little trucks.
