I Have my own authority at the moment but i wanted to move up to big rigs for better opportunities.purchasing a truck and trailer would be a lot more liability to me than purchasing a truck and leasing a trailer.I’m very confused on what route i should go to expand my business

I know several young guys with their own authority pulling cattle, feed etc. Insurance can be a hurdle, but isn’t guaranteed to be. Depends on where your from and what your looking to do. It’s common in the AG side of trucking to lease a trailer from a company that keeps you loaded. You provide the truck, authority and sometimes insure the trailer sometimes not. Again location and what your willing to do matters

having your own authority already will be huge for insurance and I would talk to them about going to truck and trailer, it probably won’t be cheap, but it beats the hell out of playing rent a trucker for some idiot bean counter at a lease company.

your mile radius for running will also be a huge factor

    Outside the box thinking again.
I like to see a young Man with drive and ambition.

There’s companies that will hire 21 yr olds. There’s companies that have lease purchase programs for people fresh out of school. There are companies that lease on owner ops. Is there a company that does ALL OF THE ABOVE? @Chinatown ?

@WastellTaylor, don’t just go out and buy a truck. Hold off for a minute…what kind of freight are you planning to haul? I am assuming dry van. Some people haul light loads only. You can get by with a lighter truck. Some dry van haul nearly 80k gvw every day of the week. Don’t buy the wrong truck.

    Luck in battle.

Working for a local carrier will be problematic; un-like the self-insured MEGA carriers; most smaller to mid size carriers insurance limits them to 23 with 2 years experience...

If you have a good relationship with your present insurance broker; you may do OK but expect a rise in the cost of insurance but could be less than shopping..

I'll second driving someone else's tractor trailer first.

Focus on tractor first, often you will lease using the carrier's trailer though if over time you can buy your own, your % will go up.
