You should contact an attorney, usually the first 30 minutes is free. They will give you the best information. Depending on the facts, they may help you get that bill covered.

Just jump on one of the thousands of busses and planes full of illegal immigrants traversing the Country. You should have no problem getting health care, food stamps, or housing. You are just doing it wrong.

Step 1, contact the insurance company you were covered under when you had the injury. Ask them what date they show as your last day of work. If that date doesn't match your actual last day of employment, that insurance company is on the hook for your claim. If the company insurance was cancelled for everybody in the company on the same date for whatever reason, the company is on the hook for your claim. Federal law requires that your employer paid coverage continue through the end of the month of which you are employed. Of course that means if you leave on the last day of the month, your coverage ends that day.

Step 2, Your previous employer is required to send advance notice of insurance termination, or notify you of it when you give notice that you're leaving the job. They're also required to send you notice of COBRA eligibility within 30 days of leaving the job. If they didn't, contact the labor board in your state and report them.

Step 3, hire a lawyer that will work on contingency, and sue the crap out of your previous employer. Any decent attorney would love to get their hands on a case as easy as this one.

You must be offered COBRA when you leave your job (if you were part of a company health insurance plan. I had a friend come down with cancer over a month after she quit, and the company was on the hook because they didn’t offer COBRA.

Under COBRA, you are responsible for the entire premium, not just your 20% or whatever your company takes out of your check. COBRA is not expensive, insurance is expensive.

I was sure that our lord and savior Barack Obama fixed all of the unfairness and inequity in the health insurance system. I am shocked that anybody is having any difficulty with the system whatsoever!

Check .... you insurance probably wasn't canceled. But what has happened in order to cover Obama care, the deductible has gone through the roof.

$6k was about what I was put of pocket when my back went out. Just for a visit to the emergency room. All pushed to the deductible.

Before Obama care. Had a kidney stone. Emergency room, overnight stay in the hospital and out patient surgery by a specialist ... $300.

Same insurance company. Oh and the weekly premiums more than doubled under Obama care.

If you're unemployed, you can't pay the $6000
Tell whoever you owe the $6000 to that you're unemployed or lost your job and now barely making enough to survive and will pay when you can.
