It's a state by state thing, Here in California it is required if they were originally manufactured with them. But the vehicle code does not require them . But if you add them they must work. They are certainly a good idea.

I looked high and low for actual requirements stating signals are required. Unless it's a state by state thing, the fed regs does not require they have to be turn signals. It does have to be reflective tape and a side marker lamp.>> http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regu.../fmcsrruletext.aspx?chunkkey=0901633480023909
Don't hold me 100% on this, regulations do change and I have not seen a update to this. Maybe someone else can find a better link to this regulation. -
They are indeed a good idea. Make them 150 watt halogens so them idiot 4-wheelers can see them
-
If they see them they think that means to stay on that side of the trailer.

hahahahaha.. so ##### true

no doubt, i don't think even a school bus arm would get the message to some

I remember seeing a trailer one day with a sign on each door: "There are 5 turn signals on each side of this vehicle if you can't see them please have your eyes examined"
postmandav Thanks this. -

Truck driver don't yield either. Tonight i was loaded to 79950/Northbound from the 215 onto the 15, you have to get over 3 lanes to get to the slow lane, 4 wheeler let me over no problem, the 18 wheelers kept me hung in the 3rd lane till a CHP blocked it to give me a chance to get to the slow lane. these truck were about 10 feet apart. 3 miles futher up the right lane has to merge over 1 to the left, and again signal on start over and he comes a 18 wheeler charging up beside me forcing me to grab the shoulder.
Justice was served the CHP that blocked for me earlier saw this, and pulled him into the north bound coop. The only point being is its not SWIFT or the four wheelers, There is just alot of drivers that only look out for number 1.
