Silly us! My friend and I thought that the trainer should be in charge during training.

Nope. The person behind the wheel is in charge of the movement of the truck. Others can give advice, but the buck stops at the driver.

The trainer is supposed to be training a new driver to drive responsibly and safely.

Supposed to be, being the key words.
Too many of them are simply in it for the extra money, and have no interest in actually teaching safe practices.

As ZVar indicated, it is the person behind the wheel that is being held responsible for what happens - so it is the person behind the wheel that has to be in charge.

Why doesn't your friend have the stamina to stay awake for an entire shift? He should have slept longer/gone to bed earlier the day before.

Taking a 2 hour nap in the middle of an LTL shift is deeply frowned upon.

Maybe the fact that almost all the driving is at night had something to do with it.

That's why he didn't want to stop early.

your record, your future, you’re the captain of the ship when you’re behind the wheel. He’s there to observe and guide. In other words you are in charge at all times when decisions effect your future.

LTL companies require “training” even if you are experienced driver. Unfortunately, the driver is the captain of the shift but these trainers will fail students if they decide to pull over nap.

i always found a way to take a quick power nap, while driving a day cab. in fact, the majority of my years driving was in a day cab. and i mean from MASS to Richmond, VA.....or from RIchmond, VA, to Louisville, KY, or from Louisville, back to MASS.

    it can be done.

when i did some local work, i found time to take a power nap during my half our lunch.....so it can be done, in a day cab.

2 hours is a bit too much, but a "power nap" of under 30 minutes will refresh most people.

i had been thru the same thing, either with a trainer, or lead driver, until i had my own truck. "pull over if you have to", i was always told.
