I have a family member with a small business asking us to move a load for them next month. We are happy to do so as a favor, and save them a ton versus letting brokers be involved. Therein lies the question, as I have yet to schedule a load without a broker and want to do things by the books. Will just a BOL and invoice suffice, or will we need some version of Rate Confirmation for direct shipments?

Make it abundantly clear, what the charges will be. Doing business with family can be a recipe for disaster. Too many chances of the relationship going sideways. Do not make this a habit, be clear on the charges.

I appreciate the advice, Lazer, but still looking for clarification on the paperwork side of things.

depends if you have your own authority. if you do, the BOL is sufficient to keep you legal from carrying stolen goods. you could do a ratecon if you think there is any chance of confusoin on the charges with the family. if you are leased on it should go through them.

Id tell my family member that youre gonna do the same thing you would with a broker. Youll invoice them. As far as "needing" a rate confirmation I would certainly sign something with them so youll have the amount to invoice them.

All you need is a blank bol filled out.

Lotsa oil freight on flatbeds get no bills.

    K. Sounds like I will be fine with their BOL and a generic rate con and invoice, business as usual. I appreciate the feedback all.
