UK HGV to Canadian

Which province are you looking at? Each province has different rules regarding licensing.

 

Hgv entitlement doesn't carry over. Your license will only be class 5 ( car ) but should qualify you for a class 1 learners permit. Unless you're in the maritime you'll need to do the melt stuff as well.

 

As above. Your UK C+E is only valid as a car license.
You would need to complete the MELT course which is several weeks in a classroom room plus practical driving. The actual test comprises a pre-trip practical followed by an air brake practical and finally a road test.
The course seems to vary a bit from province to province but generally takes between 6 -8 weeks and costs around $8k - $10k.
You would need to have status in Canada to be eligible to do the course such as a work permit or equivalent.

 

Yeah I was just going over one companies requirements that recruits foreign drivers who I'll leave anonymous at this stage in Manitoba and a driver is expected to complete this driving course at a cost of about $8000 Canadian dollars my thought is why do drivers that are already experienced have to do such a course. Is there no grounds for those with experience being expedited? My guess would be I'd be training the trainers no joke .

 

Isn’t MELT Canada wide? I’ve never met anyone who had to take it but something makes me think I’ve heard about it in Alberta as well.

 

Because too many people had fake experience in the past is my guess.

 

Yeah I understand that fact, however if would become pretty obvious during the training that the driver does know what he/ she is doing.

 

Yes but by that time they invested a bunch in said driver and can’t use him until trained. So they rather have a rookie that accepts peanuts for two years or so.

 

It wasn't a requirement in the maritimes when it was introduced from Ontario west , and I've not heard it mentioned here yet but I'm in no doubt it'll get here.

I agree withe earlier poster suggesting it was not a sensible thing to apply this to experienced drivers, but I've see many drivers here from the sub continent, and from other places that have unusual alphabets who may hold commercial driving licenses from their own countries but are not competent to operate in North America. A quick look at you tube is all you need to confirm that ! On the basis that government isn't going to exempt some countries drivers and restrict others to needing melt its going to be here forever in one way or another.
