OK so maybe I'm misunderstood in these threads. I'm not absolving the driver of blame, nor am I trying to blame someone else. I just don't understand such a harsh sentence. I don't understand him being the fall guy when there were other factors that led up to this.
Now let's think of something here. Many of us as rookies think we are ready, then we are out here by ourselves. You're average rookie is probably thinking, "I need to get to the big money." Trucking gets so glamorized it's crazy, and these drivers get turned out like there's no tomorrow, oftentimes ill-prepared. They get used to driving in the south or midwest where it's easy, then they encounter terrain that they have not been prepared for. How was he supposed to know if he was ready for that if he hadn't been prepped? You can't plan for something you're ignorant to. All I am saying is, going forward, to prevent these fatalities, there has to be closer looks at these drivers and how well they're trained before getting out here. Also, they gotta look a little closer at some of these fly by night companies too. You guys tall about deregulation alot in the industry, and those types of companies are a direct result of that.

The fact that cold blooded murderers sometimes don't even get half the sentence this driver got, I think is what shocks people, not that he didn't deserve to be punished...

Not trying to be a nationalist here, but all of our road signs are in English, you need to be able to read them to hold a CDL. I feel the sentence was fair and the company needs to be held responsible as well.
