Ok, so I'm not a trucker but my husband just left yesterday for orientation with Prime, Inc. He is new to trucking. We have done a lot of research and Prime looked like the best bet. (I must say some posts he read on here from U2exit and others helped ALOT!) He starts orientation tomorrow in Missouri and I'm just trying to get some more info. First. about a month ago, before he decided what he was doing, he got his permit here in Michigan. Does that help at all or does he need to still go through with Prime and get a Missouri Permit? He doesn't seem to think it makes a difference so I'm sure he didn't ask anyone but I guess that's why he's got me! Also, their ad says "get paid to get your CDL". I know at some point they will give you a $200 loan per week and then later he will get $600 per week or .12 per mile. Can anyone let me know the timeline for that? I'm sure this info is here somewhere but there is so much info, i thought maybe I should post my own question.
Like I said, we are new to this world of trucking and I'm sure we are in for an adventure. I feel confident that he made the right decision to go with Prime. We miss him terribly already but I'm sure we will adjust. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Having the permit ahead of time isn't necessary, but he won't have to do the cram session at orientation to get it. :biggrin_25525:

He will start getting the $200 a week once he goes through and passes all aspects of orientation and is assigned a instructor. He'll continue getting the $200 a week for 30 days or when he finishes the instruction phase and passes his CDL skills test...whichever comes first.

Once he passes his CDL skills test, he will officially become an employee of Prime and make $600 or .12 a mile each week...whichever is greater. At this point, he'll be in the training phase.

Thanks Tina. Do/did you work for prime? Do you or anyone know how long he may be gone this first trip. I have in my head that it is about 2 months, then if it is shorter, I'll just be super excited!:biggrin_2559:

My dh works for Prime. He started orientation on October 20th and went out with an instructor the following Monday. Came back in the weekend before Thanksgiving for some pad practice and on the Monday before Thanksgiving took and passed the CDL skills test. At that point, he was assigned a trainer, but his trainer wouldn't be in to pick him up until later on in th week. He was going to come home, but decided to stay in Springfield because if he came home, he wouldn't get paid. So, we did the next best thing...we went to be with him in Springfield and were able to spend Thanksgiving together.

My dh was told in orientation not to expect to go home before 8 weeks into it. However, it worked out the he could have come home just over 4 weeks. There will be home time during the instruction/training phase, it depends upon what your dh and his trainer work out. We had decided going into it that my dh would take as little home time as possible, as it would allow him to get through the training process quicker.

That is pretty much how we look at it too--we can deal with whatever we need to--it will be a rough year or so but I know we can get through it.

Try to stick to that thinking as much as you can and you two will get through it just fine. :biggrin_25525:

    Good to hear it.

Nah, it wouldn't make sense to have them make him test for the permit if he already has it.
