After a year of filling out applications and giving away resumes, I finally got a call from a drayage company for a road test and even after 20 years of driving everything from a beat up old R Models to Peterbilts I feel a little nervous. I'm not going to give the name of the company because I don't want to hear anything negative and will have to find out for myself. The company is out of Muscle Shoals, AL and has a new account pulling containers from KY to Huntsville, AL and it has been years since I have taken a road test. If anyone can give me some advise, it should would be appreciated.

Just relax, sit back and do what you do. Just don't do anything illegal or unsafe. I just act like no one is even in the seat next to me. That's about the best I can say.
kickin chicken, Mooch, Bama J and 1 other person Thank this. -
Yep just try an calm down and relax which is hard to do when doing a road test. Dont worry you're probably gonna miss an grind a couple gears here an there, just dont get frustrated and just keep moving like you planned to miss that gear. I would always grind gears when I'd be driving the dump truck with the big boss in the jump seat next to me. I would get so #### nervous even though ten minutes before he got in that truck I was floating and meshing like perfect. Good luck on your new adventures!

Bama J, visualize a snot nosed 5 year wonder kid giving you your road test. You haven't forgot how to drive or back'r up. Hang loose, go with the flow, and it'll all come back to ya. Hell, you'll probably teach something to the guy giving the road test lol.
Bama J, Baack and kickin chicken Thank this. -
Com'on Dude, 20 years? Just distract the guy, he's probably the shop janitor anyway, since all the safety honchos will have gone to a meeting or something, right? Just start talking about how much money you signed on for (say $100 grand a year, guaranteed, plus a 3 day workweek and 6 weeks paid vacation.) The guy will be so irritated at the company president, he won't even think about your screw-ups during the test.

Brothaaaa!!! Relax Man!!!! I was in the same boat about 4 years back, was taking a road test for Kennedy, I had 16 years at that time but never had driven anything with a sleeper, my test would be in a truck with a sleeper, I waS FREEKIN, came on here and made the same post, everyone said the same thing, and they were right! At this point You can drive a cruise ship with wheels glued to it, You will have no problem, take a breath and go get that job. No good Lucks from me, You don't need it.
Bama J, GliderDaddysWife, Baack and 1 other person Thank this. -
I'm sure you'll be fine with the experience you already have. Before getting in the truck, I would mention a pre-trip to the person giving you the test. Not doing that cost me a pretty good job once. I did everything perfectly as far as driving goes, but if I would've just asked if they wanted me to do a pre-trip I would've been given the job. Don't wanna mess it up over something like that.
Baack, kickin chicken and Bama J Thank this. -
Want to thank everyone for the advise, suport and I made it fine. It's just a small company with old trucks and another driver went wth me on the road test and just went a mile down the hwy and back with a empty container. Passed my physical and all he is waiting on is my MVR and drug test results that I know are both clear. I will have a dedicated run from Huntsville AL to Bowling Green Ky and hook and drop trailers in the surrounding areas.
