Maybe at one time, but not so much now when comparing them to newer engines. Water pump for my DD15 was a little over $800.

Compare same generation engines. Turbo for my 60series is $8-900. Same year cat twin turbo.. not so much. I liked the cat I had, if I were truck shopping it wouldn't turn me off to have a cat, but I would want a 6nz I think. That's a great engine from what I've heard.

Again though, how many turbos are you replacing that this is the determining factor in your engine choice? You must be alot harder on your engine than I am.

No reason to be going to Cat for parts, you'll just get used parts there anyway from what I've read. Aftermarket is 30 to 50% cheaper and just as good. Looking at heads in particular. Nobody wants that OEM wastgated turbo either, throw that crap away and slap a Borg on there.
I don't quite understand why Cats just don't seem to get the fuel mileage as anything else of that age, they pull like a train though.

I've done one on my current truck? I will probably do a water pump eventually and a compressor. What does it matter? Cat parts are a lot more expensive, and that's all I said? All these engines are approaching rebuild time, it is something the op should think about when purchasing. All I was doing was giving him the Info. It's not a lie, cat Is proud of their parts. I just looked at a water pump for a 60 series or a C15, it's over double, and that's aftermarket.

Like I said, to each their own. A truck is a tool, get what suits you. All I'm saying is; if a couple grand a year or whenever is the deciding factor in that process......thats pretty sad if you don't make enough to absorb that cost.

Who said anything about "making enough" and what business doesnt watch the bottom line? I can own whatever truck I want. I choose to own a columbia glider kit with a 12.7. Series 60. Its hands down the cheapest truck to maintain and fix on the road. Parts are everywhere, easy to get it worked on, it's a tool, and the less I spend on it, the more I can spend on my family, vacations, toys, (my wife says I have too many) retirement savings, etc. Couple grand a year times the 5 I've already owned this truck is 10k. In my pocket. Never mind the 1.5+ MPG a 60 series gets over a c15. I've owned both, know them well enough, and offered MY opinion. I'm entitled to it just as much as you are to yours. Enjoy my friend!

Like I said, to each thier own. You can't get mad when you put your opinion on the internet and others disagree with it, such is the nature of the beast.

I didnt get mad, believe me, somebody disagreed, disagree all you want, just leave out the "you dont make enough" stupid comments, like you said, to each their own.

It goes with the territory. Why is it that hundreds of thousands of other guys/companies can run Cat engines then? If the cost was such a huge factor and all?
