Good day all,
I apologize first if this may be in the wrong place.
I am considering returning to OTR driving. My situation is: I let my CDL go about 2-3 years ago. I've done some research with CT DMV requirements, either one of two ways this can be done.
First- return to a CDL training school, and go through the complete process all over again.
Second- study the DMV CDL pre-tests, take the permit test, rent/borrow someone's rig (similar to what you plan on driving) and take both the road and written exams.
My question is two-fold really:
1.) has anyone out there actually returned to driving via the second option? and can offer their experience in doing so.
2.) do you know anyone that actually (rents) his/her truck and trailer? I'm curious if there is anyone who would do this.

This is the third or fourth thread I have seen lately on this topic. I scratch my head. I got my license at 17. I drove with my dad about 3-4 months at 19, and then never planned to drive a truck for a living. I did have to pick up store fixtures for my company's OAY Ski sale in the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, so having my Class A (pre-CDL days) came in handy. I didn't drive a truck for a living until I was 33 years old. It would never have occurred to me to let my cdl lapse. Most states besides California just require a fee. Why let it lapse?

I'm in the same situation. Drove over the road for 4 years and once I switched careers I never thought about going back. 12 years later I want to go back to trucking so here I am going through everything all over again. I will never let that happen again.
feldsforever, Bean Jr. and Chinatown Thank this. -
Got mine back in 80. Worked at a non trucking job but kept the license active. Quit for a few months went to driving. Old boss called me back. Been there for 40 yrs. Still have kept the CDL because of the crap hoops they would make me jump thru. Ya it cost me more to have it and the medical card but I would rather have it this way.

Thanks to all of you for responding, I appreciate it.
To answer Bean Jr: because I listened to someone who said I didn't need it anymore instead all the drivers who had vehemently said, "don't let your license lapse...ever!!"
I can be an idiot, dumb move I know!Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
