As I've mentioned before, I am about to start training at a local college on Jan 11th. I am paying for it out of pocket b/c the WIA stuff is taking way too long and too complicated. And quite frankly, I have the money. Oh well, I figure what's $5k if it's going to be what I do for a living (driving that is)??

My question is what benefits come with my decision?

After I get my CDL from the community college, won't I still have to start out just like everyone else who went thru the CDL Mill schools? I won't be any better than someone who went thru....let's say Werner or Stevens, right?? Won't I still be fighting for the same entry-level jobs as those mill trainees? I know I'm not confined to the school in which I trained, but without experience I figure I'll be looking at Stevens, Swift, Roehl, PAM, USA, etc. anyway. It's not like I can just go pick some company because I didn't go to a mill school. So really what's the benefit?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

Are they asking 5K for your training ???

Most community colleges charge less than $1200

Oh and you will be MUCH better off than simply going to Werner or Swift for training.

Weatherford College has a 160 hour CDL class. Was $3k last year. And they were getting people in free through Work Force. I would check it out and also see if your's can get it paid for.

yep, it's like $4300, and I'm taking counting on living expenses while out there so therefore the $5k. I haven't seen any CC for anywhere close to $1200. Is that a semester long program or something? The one I'm going to is only a month long. Maybe that's why the price??

Im just a wannabe at the moment, and so this may be completely wrong, but from my research I think the $1200 days for school are gone. Somebody please tell me I'm wrong

While it may have went up recently, we have one on the coast that used to have a 7 week program for $700.

You're better off going through the community college though. Regardless of price. And you'll be much better prepared.

And yes, you'll still have to go out with a trainer for a few weeks. But it won't be anything like what the guy who used the company for "free' training has to go through.

thanks for your input. appreciate it! yeah, when i found out the price for the local CC i was questioning it b/c i've read on here numerous times that it's about the price you mentioned....somewhere between $1000-$2000. so i called around a few places here in the dallas area and they were all over $4k. again, i have the $$ so it's not a decision breaker for me. just wanted to get input

Here in Phoenix at the community college its $4900. Its 8 weeks, the first 4 weeks it 4 hours a day (morning or evening), mon-friday classroom. The 2nd 4 weeks you have the same schedule as above plus several hours behind the wheel. They have 5 trucks, 2 students per truck and I think about 20 students per class max. They tell me currently Swift and a couple other companies are recruiting from them. They also help you start to apply in week 2 of the class so you have a start on that.
I figure if someone is serious about this, $5k is not unreasonable if you have to use student loans or whatever.

I went through Dallas County CCD to get my CDL training, and I'm glad that I did. My class was very small (me and one other guy) so I got so much hands on it isn't even funny. My experience was very good and I think I'm much better off for it than going with a company sponsored school.

One of the best benefits in my opionion however is that you are not on the hook to anyone but your own pocketbook for school. No company can hold your training costs over your head while you work for them.

When you figure an average of 9,000 jobs are lost in the industry every month , carriers continue to reduce their fleets , and freight shows no sign of recovery soon the greed of CDL schools is disgraceful .
More and more graduates are posting here saying they can't find a job .
