Always an adventure on those roads.

"Some of our friends are getting killed," said Richard Deschamps, a truck driver who has travelled across Canada for the past 25 years.

"It seems to be an everyday occurrence up there now. People passing on curves, hills."

Deschamps said a former colleague of his was killed on Highway 102, a shortcut for drivers crossing the country on the Trans-Canada Highway....

Left Winnipeg Sunday headed to Toronto roads were a complete joke turned around and it’s only mediocre at best . Around ignace area they kept crashing according to Twitter . I bet when I go through tomorrow it’s still 4 inches of snow pack or choppy as heck. I really hope they do raise classification to class 1 it’s way overdue and will save lives by lessening the huge line ups on junk roads.

11 & 17 are incredibly stretches of highways that are beyond in need of redoing / twinning.

They're slowly working on getting asphalt on the small shoulders.

I don't think twinning is worth cost for most of it but some more passing lanes on 11 would be nice.

No more getting traction in the shoulder. Paving shoulder just a bad idea for winter,,,great for bicycles.

I used to run 11 this time of the year, it's safer; 100km, longer, colder ,but no lake effect snow and less hills ,less traffic, but the pavement was bad; i don't how is it now, i din't run it for two years.

11 is better than 17 for sure. 17 is comprised of hills going up, hill going down and a sharp turn at the bottom of every one. It sucks even in July. 11 is much flatter and straighter. I think 11 has a bit longer of a section between Nipigon and Longlac with no cell service though.

I remember driving highway 11/17 when I first got my AZ and remember seeing trucks in ditches all over the place, clearly abandoned for a few days. The guy I was driving with didn't seemed phased by it at all like it was a normal theme. That was 6 years ago, can't even imagine what that's like now.

As for training, won't really do much. You can train from March to October and then end up driving in winter road conditions from November to Feburary. Don't really see how even an extra month of training would make a difference. I'm on my third year of driving now and I'm just starting to get a bit comfortable with snow covered roads.

Props to all of you who run up there. I'll stay in the golden horseshoe.

I started running on Highway 17 over 40 years ago,,,up and down north shore. No training and accidents were rare.
The long grades were much narrower between Pays Plat and Schrieber back then. When the waves were high they would send spray across the highway at east Rossport entrance.
Only road closure I recall was once in early 80s at Manitouwadge corners. OPP allowed me through at my own risk since I had Her Majesty’s Royal Mail crest on door. So off i went,,had the highway to myself all the way to Nipigon.
