Hey everyone. I have an appointment at the DMV (Florida) to take the tests for my CDL Permit in a couple weeks when I return to the US. From what I understand, I only really need to study General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination for the Permit. I've had more than enough time though to study the entire CDL Handbook and take all of the free practice tests on the DMV Genie app. At this point, I feel good with the HazMat, Tanker, Doubles, and Passenger sections too.

Assuming there was time at the DMV, would I be able to take all of the Endorsement tests when getting my CDL Permit? Is this allowed, and if so, is there any downside to that at all?

Just wondering if this is even possible to have out of the way before starting the CDL school.

    Chinatown Thanks this.

Take all the endorsement test when you get your permit. No downside.

If they let you do hazmat test. You'll have xx amount of time to get your fingerprints and back ground check. Or they'll remove that endorsement.

Yea, do them all now otherwise if you need to add select endorsements after Feb 7, 2022 you will need to go to an approved school/training provider. Only one I would suggest skipping is the Passenger endorsement unless you are going to drive a bus. You would need to take two seperate pre-trip, skills and road tests if you wanted an A license with a P endorsement.

Thanks. I feel like I remember hearing something about a TWIC Card helping out with the HazMat endorsement. I received my TWIC Card earlier this year. You know if that would make a difference?

I believe is reduces the amount by about $20 but you'll still do your fingerprints and background check

Yes, get all endorsements you think you might want to get at the start. Especially tanker. HazMat requires much more than the test on the computer, but if you can afford an extra $200 to get it, get it. HazMat requires weeks of waiting and multiple appointments, but if you have one it's better for you. You can always let it expire.

You can save a little money if you do TWIC and HazMat at the same time. I hauled HazMat tanker for 3 years and only one customer ever asked to see the TWIC. It's supposed to make it easier to get into certain locations like ports or other terminals. My work didn't show that. Several of those more secure locations require something else anwyway. I would get HazMat and TWIC , just in case, if you can spare the money.

It may depend on the state. In Texas they did not allow me to add doubles/triples, tank, or hazmat to the permit. I had to go back to add endorsements after I got the CDL.

I’m in FL. It depends on the tax collector office you go to. Some will let you do multiple tests in a day if they can accommodate it, some will only allow one test per day. The fee is $6.25 per day regardless of how many tests you take that day and your permit is free.
