I couldn’t agree more. The whole taboo around money talk was for employers to keep people under paid. They’d fear monger, and use shame if you talked about money and eventually that became a society standard. “Don’t Talk About Money” which makes people disconnected to what they spend a majority of their day thinking about and doing. It’s almost like it could be a designed trap. If you don’t talk about what a labor SHOULD bring you per hour with others but are working 8-16 hours a day quietly planning all your money goals youre literally existing in a echo chamber with just your confirmation bias. You can rationalize yourself into being okay with being underpaid. It’s become so complicated due to easy to fix issues.

Something that’s changed my entire game in the stock market and made me profitable week after week was the quote “a fast nickel is better than a slow dime” and I applied to everything. Money is stupid but we need it. If you spent too much time being underpaid, no matter your age you can change that situation. 5 years, internet, change lifestyle.

I’m 35 and I have a small mortgage on my house. One car payment. I have my wife’s student loans we pay on each month. Yes I like when I CLEAR 1600 a week. That’s after taxes. I’m still on nights but there’s light on the end of the tunnel for days. But the day traffic will be undesirable. This job is to hard to leave because the money is to good. I live way under my means but it’s soooo good to have that FAT cushion.

Not considered a "knock", and your last paragraph sums it up quite well. My mom, who was a nurse for 45 years, always wondered how I could make more than her driving a truck,,,at THAT TIME. It's not so much that I doubt it can be done, for the life of me, I can't understand what kind of lifestyle you have to maintain, to have to think you need to make $100 grand a year, in ANY job. Do you people really need these castles on a hill, with 2 new dually pickups, cripes, the Shah of Saudi Arabia doesn't live that well. I'm sorry, I had a reasonably good life on half that, and to think Mack paid an unbelievable $34 grand in taxes, that's a lot of work for nothing. I suppose, if I wasn't retired, these numbers would seem more acceptable, but really? $100 grand/year to drive a truck? $34 grand in taxes? This is what it takes to live comfortably in the US? The bottom has GOT to fall out, there simply isn't enough money in the world for everyone to be "Chiefs".
BTW, until you make $1200/hour, you have a ways to go before making doctors wages. Police chief makes less? THAT'S unsettling, but true. The local county jail had 2 job openings, 1, a detention center gestapo, and 2, a line cook. Guess what paid more,,,the line cook!

Stumbled across this thread after posting on hazmat tanker pay...$104,272.71. First time in my life I have ever made six figures. Except for slip seating across three trucks, and having a bomb strapped to my back, and a very "fluid" start/end time...totally worth it! Being serious though, I have had way worse jobs for way less.

Forgive my very late reply to your post. I just started reading this thread. Began building an investment portfolio through Fidelity just over a year ago. The Liberty All-Star equity fund is definitely worth looking at (USA). Established in 1987, it is currently yielding 10%. I am not one to put all of my eggs in one basket, but putting a lot of eggs in similar baskets can work!

Outstanding post, and it makes me... I hate to say, a tad envious. I did not decide to financially pull my head out of my ### until I was 5 years past your age. Then began the search using your mindset. Finally found it at 43... Hoping I can stand it until "natural" retirement. Unfortunately, the industry keeps getting more and more messed up. I wish you the best of luck achieving your goals, 3 years before I should have!

5 years is the perfect cycle of time to change just about any part of your life. Think back on your life in 5 year increments and that should do a lot of confirmation to dispose of any disbelief one might have on their ability to control most of their life.

don’t know you, but I’m proud of you! And thank you!

I just saw Theo in November! Funniest show ever. He's in his own genre for sure.
