Chain Pay?

I always wanted to try cables. Do some of the western states treat them differently than conventional tire chains?

 

CPM always reminded me of a scene in a great movie called The Grapes of Wrath. Oklahoma farmers travel to CA during the 1930s Dustbowl era and pick fruit. The agent for a fruit farm arrives in camp and is swarmed by the "Oakies" willing to pick bushels of fruit for 2-5 cents per bushel. CPM is a holdover from the ancient days. The most honest way to pay a driver, IMO, is hourly pay. It might also be a good tool to stop poor quality customers from their routine and massive delays if only companies were brave enough to use it.

You make your point ..but I respectfully disagree with your comparison to that movie
Because then there was a completely different work ethic there were no jobs or money anywhere to speak of .. Those Okies had suffered a lot of hardships before they ever got to Ca. they also had 3 things that are a rare commodity now... Pride. Work Ethics and Appreciation .....you will be hard pressed to find any 1 of those 3 qualities in a person applying for a driving job today
And the only strong quality you will find in a job applicant today is self entitlement

 

I do agree. But if ur OTR and know that running into chain areas is a time suck if u get paid mileage. I'd think turning down the load for something else may be a better idea.

 

Oh, I was started in on why running with chains on really is very safe as traction is great, and that the time when everyone is still running fast and not realizing changing conditions (right before chain laws go on) is the most dangerous time to be on the road, but then, I really don't want to encourage any more people to be on the road if they are uncomfortable. I would much rather they hole up in the truck stop because it is too dangerous if chains are needed.........and stay there until the end of April at least, but then I decided that would be construed as snarky, so I deleted it.

 

No . The chains are legal everywhere. As are tire socks. But I would stay away from those. They are expensive and they tear up easily... a set of cables for otr work is the way to go in my opinion... as long as u keep them tight and keep the speed under 25mph.. They will last awhile..

 

I accept and agree with your points. That movie was based on a book written by a Communist, John Steinbeck. It's a great book and the movie based on the book is a really good movie. I agree and am proud this country, but mostly some parents, ever produced people like is portrayed in the book and movie. Our problems today in the nation is that we have so few people like those "Oakies" today. The country could never have succeeded or become what it achieved, before people started battering on the load-bearing walls of Civilization for the last 60 years.

My point wasn't that "Oakies" were foolish. It's comparing their understandable desperation to work, even for terrible pay, to some in the industry experienced and new that focus only on the CPM and work in terrible companies or with terrible conditions. There's no glory for choosing job with a high CPM at a company that has no freight, or treats you like trash, or gives you a truck with major defects. There's honor in doing whatever it takes to provide for your family, but not in choosing a particular trucking company you've been warned is trash if other companies are available. To me, that's supporting a corrupt employer and donating your labor to feed his family.
