Yes. I suspect that the higher rates being paid to drive the PNW factors in inclement weather, risk, chaining, etc. If the company is getting premium pay, it would be reasonable that the driver also gets paid more. I agree that it WOULD be petty, and probably a PR blunder to actually show a charge for chaining to your customer. Stuff like that can just be blended into the rate.
Chain Pay?

I add it to the rate con before I move just like you would if you were adding in detention pay waiting for en extended amount of time to unload or lumper pay if you needed. 2 sets of triples aren’t cheap and no matter how well you chain up they take wear. I’m just not giving it away for free. And by all means, you guys are willing to work cheaper then you can have at it. Definitely no arguments here.gekko1323 Thanks this.

nobody has said they are willing to work for free... the drivers that have experience running the northwest all believe they were or are paid a fair amount to do the job at hand.. which in the northwest , chaining is part of that.,...striker and God prefers Diesels Thank this.

Agreed. There has to be a meeting of the minds. If a driver (or an employer) allows themselves to be screwed, then it's on him. A couple of weeks ago I was laid up in Oregon for two nights. My contract says that I get $100 a day if laid over. I didn't get paid, and I didn't ask for it. I understand that not everything is me, me, ME. You have to think of the company too, especially if it's a small one. But the line has been drawn at some point. Like you say, it has to be fair for both sides. The first time that I have to chain up 3 or 4 times in a day, I will have a word with my boss. I won't ask for extra pay for the work I did, but you can bet that the future terms will be different. He will have a choice: agree or find another driver. Just like I will have a choice: keep getting reamed or find another job. I'm about 99% sure that I will have a new job before he has a new driver.Last edited: Jan 7, 2022
Siinman Thanks this. -
And the place I drove flatbed for paid us $50 per load whether we had to tarp or not. It’s all what anyone is ok working for and nobody can decide that except for themselves. Chances are when I was a company driver that the places offering chain pay might have lacked in other areas be it vacation or flexible in letting you take time off, there was likely a trade off. Good topic you brought up though.

I don't really drive if I need to chain up, but I'ma start charging bolt seal pay. Install and removal separate fees.

Is that so? LOL. You are a little late to the party, Hoss.

It’s not so much being against getting paid for that stuff it’s that once it sort of becomes an industry standard it can have the opposite effect if others are doing better off. For example, I am 100% against the government having their hands in anything dealing with detention pay. If the gov says $70 per hour detention to the truck after 2 hours what do you think will happen to the guys who negotiated to get $100 per hour after one hour? Or like when I pulled food grade pneumatic and we would get detention pay as soon as we showed up if the ordered the load and didn’t have room.IH Truck Guy, Oxbow, Siinman and 1 other person Thank this.
