My ex/father-in-law purchased a truck from Werner in 2000. He purchased a 1997 Freightliner Classic Condo Cab with a Super 10 in it. I guess maybe the quit putting them in there. Or, maybe it was a lease option for a owner-op. I drove it and I'd have to say it took some time to get used to. So, does Werner only have the 9 speed? or do they have other transmissions as well? And, which one is more common? Also, what type of engines do they run? Just curious. Thanks

Werner used to run 13 speeds...when i started with Werner 4 years ago they had the 9 speeds...one of my trainers who was an O/O or lease op or whatever had a Super 10...so they used to exist as company trucks...a 9 speed is basically a 13 speed w/o the splitter i think...

Werner mainly uses 9spd's. Some of the detroit powered centuries and cascadias are 10spd's. I do not know about the international prostar fleet. I do know most of their trucks have CAT C15 ACERT engine in them.

Is that a pretty good engine as far as pulling wise? I don't know much about the engines. I hope to get a Century or Cascadia because I like Freightliners. They seem to have more room

all werner engines are good high horsepower pulling engines. Is that a good answer, gilbertbs2000? The only one I don't like is the mercedes engines, and im pretty sure they only use those in daycabs at werner....the engine pulls GREAT, but the exhaust brake is almost useless, because...it's an exhaust brake, instead of a retarder....

I'm not even going to answer any of the above speculation.

Thanks phroziac. I have another question. Is Haz-Mat a must for working with Werner?

I've thought about getting it and my Passport with fast pass. I assume that they may pay more money if I have them. I'm hoping this is a good choice of a company to go with. I like them because there terminal is only about 60 miles from my home.

I forgot to ask, how is the pay mileage? Like what do they pay per mile?

Thanks, and sorry so many questions.

It's alright, i like answering [reasonable] questions [such as yours]... :)
The terminal near home is kind of nice, that way you dont have to ride on greyhound. Greyhound can be downright dangerous, there was someone that got beheaded on one a while back! (of course, ive rode 4000 miles or so in them with no issue) I live 100 miles from the Channahon, IL (just south of chicago) terminal myself. Of course, since its so near chicago, thats a 6 hour ride depending on time of day LOL

They do not pay more for having a passport, fast card, or hazmat. They made it sound like they wouldnt hire me without hazmat, but i guess they hire people without it all the time. But I live in michigan and they probably have plenty of applicants that DO have it, so.. :) They said they'd
reimburse for my passport, but they havent yet...doesnt bother me much since i was going to get one anyway...

Now, i was in indianapolis at the terminal today, and a guy told me "F*** hazmat, they dont pay more for hauling it so why should i get it". The reason i always tell people they should get it, is because it can mean the difference between having a load and having to sit for a couple days. You don't make money sitting around, so do you want to sit or drive? Of course, the guy at the terminal wouldnt believe me that, in a way, it will make you more money. Typical. :(

I don't exactly know what a fast card is but all i have is a biometric passport (all new ones are biometric...they can just scan it and pull up your info fast..) and i spend less than 10 minutes at the customs/border patrol/border services booth....after waiting in line...can be a long line at times...

Pay depends on the division or account you are on. I'm on midwestern regional and am on a sliding scale between 26 cents per mile and 40 cents per mile. I also get a minimum pay of $40 for every load. If it pays less than $39.99, I get $40, period. A lot of companies, and some divisions here, do something like paying you an extra $20 plus milage for loads under 100 miles...meaning that a 90 mile load pays more than a 105 mile load....totally shafts you.

Real short loads are awesme on midwest: I picked up a load this morning, 0 paid miles, 0 deadhead miles (LOL!!), i was in indianapolis and was supposed to go get a live load in indianapolis and drop it at the indianapolis terminal. Turned out to be a drop and hook. Actual milage was 20 miles, but it took me about 2 hours to complete the run because the roads were honestly so bad that i should not have been on them at all. I didn't realize that until the next safe haven would be....the terminal...haha.

Now, that sliding scale is supposed to be based on length of load, but it doesnt seem to be. I usually make good money on short loads anyhow.

Werner is a good company to start with, but there are a lot of complaints that a lot of people have, and I even have some complaints (look at my recent posts). I now call it "the best of the worst".

Also, Werner keeps very good tires on all of their tractors *and* trailers. They do not use any recaps at all, unless you get a flat on the road. I've worked here for 3 months and have never needed a tire changed, however, i did get a set of 10 tires put on my tractor when i first picked it up (brand new steers, 8 barely-used drives). This is really nice in the winter....

Thanks for the info. I understand what you mean so actually in a matter of speaking HAZ-Mat does pay more. Because instead of sitting you would possibly be pulling a HAZ-Mat load. Again, thanks for taking the time to respond to me. I'll probably be asking more questions as the time progresses. I've submitted all my paperwork to them and I'm waiting for the recruiter to call back. He's on vacation this week. I don't complete school till March so I'm checking all company's but more than likely I'm going with Werner.
