It was 25° when we finished, 18° after my nap. Of course, that may be your idea of warm.

 

Maybe someone has a better way? If they want this hog tied at the top, my chains aren't long enough. So I ended up hooking a chain strap to each end of the chain versus using a binder. The only other way I could think of doing it would be to use a binder on each side of the chain ( no slack ) or by hooking a second chain on but then I would have like 18 feet of slack left, which would be kinda dumb....

Initially I only used one chain strap but wasn't thrilled with 2 hooks on one J-Plate plus the opposite side wasn't really tight...

I was thinking though, lots of folks don't have chain straps, so unless you have chains that are 25 feet ( mine are 20 ) what would you do in this situation to make it work for you?

Total weight is 44k.

 

Why not just throw a strap over it?

 

Carry shorter chains. Cut up all my 20ft chains years ago. They are all 5ft or 10ft long now. If I ever need a longer chain I can just hook them together. You could get real fancy and use mid-links so they are pinned instead of just grab hooks holding them together.

you pad that under the tarp? I don’t carry pads, and have refused a couple of those based on that- figuring I’m buying a set of tarps by the time it delivers// n they aint paying enough on short hauls by me to justify a set of tarps

 

The ends and middle were padded and all the corners that contacted tarp had carpet pieces taped on. I’m old and slow so it took me a good 3 hours to get it like I wanted. It rode fine for 2300 miles. But like you mentioned there is no way I’d do that on a short run. (Unless it paid stupid money) Way too much work to keep tarps from being destroyed.

 

Way I like to do those is pull strap through from the back and then once you have it tight just fold up excess so it’s about 8-10” long and place behind the strap on top of winch. Quick wrap with a bungee and done.
