I have helped plenty of drivers at the controls, but this poor guy there was no helping him.

Killer thread, Everybody!!! :happy1: :lurk: :hello1:

At the risk of derailing the original topic--would someone care to suggest/post what you think is a really good video demonstrating proper big-rig chain installation?

    Thanks much!!!

There are a LOT of vids on youtube. It's pretty easy actually. The hard part is that the weather will be freezing and you have to deal with snow, slush, freezing rain sometimes, etc. Your fingers get numb if you're not wearing good gloves. Some of the vids have slight differences in technique, but the overall objective and ends are the same.

How is it a time suck? I chain 4 or 5 times a winter running between Denver and Grand Junction, adds maybe 30 minutes each way, how much of a time suck is it to sit in a parking lot at a TS in Denver or Junction and wait out a 4 day chain law? Even companies that pay by the hour aren't going to pay you for 96 hrs of sitting on your duff playing video games. Takes me on average 20 minutes to slap on 4 singles, I keep my speed to 35 mph max, takes 10 minutes to take them off and rehang them.

Not entirely true, while Colorado may say they are legal, it is at the discretion of the on-scene highway dept. supervisor or highway patrol officer. Not uncommon for cables to be prohibited on US 160, US 550, US 50 and CO 139 (ain't no way in hell I'd want to try 139 with cables, I shudder at the thought of regular chains), also in the oil patch, cables are strictly prohibited, watched a drill site outside parachute turn several hot shots away years back because all they had were cable chains

What if you went to your bosses and they gave you the choice, chain for free or park and wait out the chain law, for free, which option would you take?

Actually, the company already made their money, they quoted the customer XXX amount, the customer will pay it, unless of course you sitting to wait out the chain law results in a delay of service, for which the customer starts to deduct from the rate, which then brings this up, if you the driver refuse to chain for free, and cost the company money in that manner, should the company take that out of your pay?
