I get paid to not chain. Or rather did. Currently on a medical sabbatical.
gekko1323 and bentstrider83 Thank this. -
No, I think I wrote to much in my post and probably made a confusing post.
$8 per hour. The only difference is how a company would calculate what an hours worth of work is.
For local guys (or even regional guys) who chain up almost everday and all the time, $4 to chain on (30 minutes worth of work) and $4 to chain off (30 minutes worth of work).
For OTR guys who rarely chain, $8 to chain on (1 hours worth of work) and $8 to chain off (1 hours worth of work).
Yes, I believe it will take an OTR driver who rarely chains 30 more minutes for the same job that someone who chains reguarly could do it in.
I think that's fair. $8 per hour. That adds up by the end of the year for guys who do it reguarly and for guys who rarely do it, at least they would be compensated something for it. -
Yes, I had pointed that out to people in this thread that Stevens has a separate crew that does their chaining. I remember being holed up at the Flying J in Fernley, NV for 3 or 4 days because Donner was shut down. One of their "chain gang" guys came and repowered me.Wasted Thyme Thanks this.

Maybe I don't understand something here. How ya get the #### chain under the tire if ya don't move the truck? You driving up on a block of wood? I'm thinking I'm missing something here.
To be fair, I run strictly local in Pennsyltucky, so it's rather rare that I have to deal with chains. But it does occasionally happen.
I hang the chains over top the tire, pull ahead a few feet and hook everything up. Takes me about 15 minutes total, hanging singles across the rear axle. I've tried laying them out and driving over them and that was a joke. And I knew better, but someone swore it worked better that way, and I had to prove him wrong.
Oh and in keeping with the theme of the thread, NO I don't get extra pay for the once or twice a year I hang chains. And I don't care. If I had to do it a few times a day all winter long, then I'd care.alds, bentstrider83, gekko1323 and 1 other person Thank this. -

I chained coming out of Colorado one time and it was first time to chain and I thought to myself well this is the only time I will chain . A day later near Amarillo I went thru Paloduro Canyon and I drove into a hell of a road with no way out , Cars were stuck and I pulled over and driver said your stuck here with the rest of us . I tell him I got chains and pull forward chain up and Locked diff, proceeded forward and than I was approaching a 6% hill snowed over and 2 trucks in the ditch at the bottom . They wave at me to gun it and at this point it was gunned and I passed them and made it to the top and they all pointed at my chains as to say we should have done what he did . So that was my crash course in chaining and driving in snow and I white knuckled it to the top and when this driving stuff is said and done it will probably be a memory that I wont forget . Anyways , Chain the hell up !
bentstrider83, gekko1323 and bumper Jack Thank this.
