I'm looking at replacing a motor that chewed up a crank with a good runner. I've found several engines but most are either 410hp versions (original was 435 non egr) or the 450hp versions that have egr.
I guess my question is what are the main differences between them? Obviously the egr motors have an egr and cooler but is there any other differences that would prevent me from taking a low hours egr motor and deleting the egr and cooler? Or alternatively, taking a 410hp motor and swapping with my 435hp ecm? My mechanic and I are not very familiar with the Mercs but we are under the assumption that we should be able to slide one out, slide in the new one and go with very little hassle.
Thanks in advance for any help, in closing I was also curious if anyone knew of a shop or mechanic in Ontario, Canada that has lots experience with the Mercedes engines?
Thanks again!

Best thing to do is replace it with a detroit 12.7. Easy swap. Better engine and easier to find parts for. If you were in Arkansas I could point you to a shop that does it.
little cat 500 and spsauerland Thank this. -
It's not that simple in Ontario, Canada unfortunately. I had that very same idea but was informed that due to the ridiculous emissions laws here we have to have the engine match the Vin on whatever truck you're running....so in my case if I wanted to swap a 60 in I'd have to find a Western Star 4900 FA that has Detroit on the Vin and swap all the tags onto my truck. Then it becomes even more of a headache because say I find a donor truck, well, am I wasting my time and money paying to pull 2 motors, reinstall one, swap over the wiring in the dash etc etc? Depending on the condition of the donor truck it might make more sense to just run that truck and keep mine for parts, which I'm not a big fan of because my truck is still a bit too nice to be a parts truck.
Then there's the price of the donor truck....I didn't find a single truck with a 60 series that was less than 30k and the one truck I did find was a 99 set back axle with a 70" bunk. So the Vin wouldn't work for me and I'd have to spend another 15-20k changing the bunk out to a 54 or smaller so I can still run over length with a headache rack. The tree huggers need to bugger off about the emissions, id have swapped in a 6nz or 60 series and been done with it a long time ago. I guess thats what I get for living in ####### Chinada.
Anyway, I picked up a running Merc yesterday, price was right and the shop I bought it from is gonna stand behind it so that's a plus. I think I'll take the original motor and find a crank for it and have a build done on it so when the replacement gives up the ghost, I'll have a fresh replacement waiting. -
So a little update, I got the truck back on the road and it seems to run strong. Aside from an exhaust leak at the manifold there's only a couple issues....my engine brake and cruise control will not work....the Snap-on reader shows them working properly but they just don't in reality. So we are wondering if a wire got knocked loose somewhere and if anyone has the wiring diagrams for that? Truck is an 04 Western Star 4900FA.
The other issue is that the truck doesn't seem to have the power it had before so I'm curious if anyone knows if the unit pumps and injectors are different on these motors? The motor that blew up was a 435hp version and the replacement is 350hp but we swapped the 435hp ecm on it and it really doesn't seem quite there in regards to power.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!
