I have the same problem with my 2005 Intl 9400I. with the 500 hp ISX bought it used about 6 mouths ago with 410000 miles on it . and ran great till the cold weather hit . and the chattter started . it sounds just like you have described here . been to the Intl dealer 2 times put it on the computer and the ecm was good no codes, injectors good, turbo good, egr good, fuel psi good , so i had then set up the valves injectors and jack brake. and do a full service. but no change still chatters . a week later back to the shop it is getting worse .left it there over nite . the mechanic took it out for a test drive the next day and said it sounded good but that i have a cracked exhaust pipe at the turbo so he changed it . and off i go again still on change . so now it chatters most of the time so back i go tomorrow to take the mechanic for a ride so i know he hears the chatter this time and see what he thinks . will let you all know how this trip go"s :biggrin_25510:

Hi 13 letter I tried what Rowe land & cattle suggested here . i put a piece of carboard over the grill to restirct the air flow to the rad . and increase engine temp . from 178F to run at 188F/ 194F and it works no more chatter and the power is back . the engine sounds much better now too. like it did in summer before the cold temps hit us . so maybe all it is a bad thermostat. but for now cardoard will work for me and it is cheaper lol. Thank you Rowe land & cattle for the tip . PS i only covered 3/4 of gill .

Temps were up into the mid 30's today. Most of the time the rattle and low power was gone. Came and went quite a few times though. Little over a week ago in 5 degree temps it acted fine too most the time. Kinda made me think it wasnt cold weather/ cold air related.

Really appreciate the info guys. When the temps drop again I'll try the cardboard. Or a t'stat swap. Interesting!

When you heard the 'chatter or clatter', did it do it all the time or intermittent too?

Also, the overhead was done on it, too.

I've got the same problem with an 05 pete just purchased last month, and were having 30 to 50 degree weather and mine still clatters under light throttle. Replaced turbo, thermostats, barometric sensor and still same thing. Doesnt do it all the time just when it wants to I guess. 13 letter if you figure it out let me know, and if I figure it out I will let you know. Had overhead ran 7,000 miles ago did no difference. Hoping is just the nature of the isx. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Fan belt can be source of rattle. Dirty, oily or just old, worn out.
I have replaced belt tensioner, which helped some, new belt and clean pulleys eliminated rattle completely. Temperature didnt seem to be factor in my case tho.

OK, had an issue tonight, resulting in a roadside callout.

Cummins tech mentioned the tick is work jake rockers....

makes sence as the sounds goes away when the oil pressurises the jake system

According to Cummins its a known cold air problem mostly in Northern climates. Use a winter front was a response, no known fix. The noise is detonation or dieseling, in the combustion chamber, as fuel is restricted by the ECM. Performance and driveability is affected when this noise occurs at part throttle, low load conditions. More throttle tells the ECM to give it fuel, and the condition stops. Blocking the front of the charge air cooler does seem to help. Real impressed with Cummins. A known problem and they just ignore it. Just like the Jakes not working fully. Not all of them do it, so oh well.

What problems or noises are you having with yours? Under what conditions? Not a cold air problem I'm sure. Curious
