I am buying a 2003 classic with a s60 detroit. The fleet im purchasing from has changed oil every 25000 miles and engine now has 650000 on it. If I change oil every 10-15000 now will it make a difference on time to overhaul? The truck is in really nice shape and would like to keep it for a while, and I know I will overhaul when needed.
Oil analysis looks good now, but would changing oil sooner help or not now?
Oil Change intervals??

Probably not. Most oils are good for 20-25000 mile oci. If you are wanting to do the most for your engine, try putting on a bypass oil filter or Spinner II to keep the oil cleaner longer. Will be a lot cheaper than changing the oil more. If your UOA's are looking good, then I would just put on a bypass and continue the UOA's to monitor things. Of course, if you are getting oil and filters really dirt cheap, maybe this advice not worth anything.
SHC and michiganflatbedder Thank this. -
The fresher the oil is the better job it will do. We recommend going every 20,000 KILOMETERS! Not miles! Good oil is cheap insurance! Oil might be, repeat, might be ok still after 15000 miles, but who wants oil in their engine that is only doing 70% of the job! If you don't mind spending some extra $$$ I say go for it!
michiganflatbedder Thanks this. -
I change every 10,000 reguardless. 1.3 mil & still going.

The question nobody asked and should have is.... What kind of oil was the previous company using? Was it synthetic? That may be why they was going 25000 miles on an oil change. If your running synthetic and changing the oil every 10000 miles your gonna go broke, that stuff isn't cheap!
I go anywhere from 10-15000 miles on my oil, Rotella is what I'm running. -
852000 miles running a bypass filter and oil changed once a year, always had good results on my oil samples, engine still runs great, mileage is the same as when I bought it,
why change the oil if it doesn't need it, in fact the sampling shows good even after a year but I just change it with my spring maintenance schedule.
sampling is the key. -
