What I see if you have to ask are you ready for the responsibility? A lot you must do in running a business and you must be sure you want it.
I had nothing to add just your question makes me wonder. I personally have a hard time cause of others I had worked for in past who thought they were ready but turned around and failed now haunts my career path..
All I can really suggest is be sure it what you want 100% and ready for the headaches
Why should I get My Own Authority

I can give you a reason, we need more trucks to support the new brokers coming on line everyday. They can't make any money unless they find someone to haul their double and tripled brokered loads. You say you have been in business for yourself for 25 years, so you think you can make a start up company work in a field where new and old companies a like are failing every day.
Now if you have your own base of direct customers then it might work, but they are hard to get and even harder to keep.
If you think you will be getting paid 100% of the freight bill just remember most brokers right now are skimming 20 to 40 % off the top.
Read about CSA 2010 before you leap. 1 bad driver can put you under before you know it. -
"Old Man" I love the name!
That's what I'm talking about. Why should I pay a broker 20 to 40% and take all the risk, when I can stay leased to someone that is giving me freight. -
Why should you?
Because you can sit back and say, today I feel like getting a long run out West and just chill out for 3 or 4 days on I80. Just set the cruise and listen to the radio.
When I get to Portland I think I'll take the weekend off, pull into Jubitz, get a truck wash, do my laundry and watch a movie.
Say what? Take a load of onions to NYC? I don't think so. Pardon me, but did you say take a load 1,560 miles and needs to be there in 2 days, good luck pal.
Nobody tells me what to haul, unreasonable deadlines, inspections every 120 days (shove it) or when I can go home.
If I want to push I can, if not then I can do that also.
You may not make more then being leased on but working for yourself is 100 times beter then someone telling you what to do. I LOVE IT.BigJohn54, bobobrazil, Gears and 4 others Thank this. -
Because no one is giving you freight, they're taking their cut also. I have everything, from authority to a brokers license. I haul the freight and I sometimes broker it. Drivers are their own worst enemy I have gotten stuff hauled I can't believe anyone actually took it. They take the load then get on internet an complain how they're not making any money. If it's cheap don't haul it, the rate will go up or it'll sit plain and simple.
Just because you have your own authority doesn't mean you can't still lease on with a company if you wish. Just opens up your options, if you get tired of the company you can get a load on your own instantly.bobobrazil and 2fuzy Thank this. -
Is there a remote possiblity that you can make more than being leased? What would you guess you put in your pocket using brokers and maybe a few of your own loads as a new O/O? I'd love to buy a flatbed, but I'm chicken I'd lose my rear and be broke or broker than I am already working for a mail contractor.Tommo2 Thanks this.

where do you think they're getting most there freight? sure some is direct customers but i've seen companies hauling more and more broker loads every day. You can't always have direct accounts to the exact point every truck needs to get to. So those fees are being paid, and your paying the company for paperwork
I can do all of that where I am leased on to. it's not about being leased to someone it's about who your leased to. I'd never lease my truck anywhere that I don't have a say in what I do, where I go or when I go. At that point you may as well be a company driver.
And I only give up 10%Last edited: Jan 15, 2010

the rewards are better as when you are a L/O you are paying them to find work and shuffle paper neither of which are that hard to do
and sure as hell that service is not worth 25-50% off the toplowjo Thanks this. -
