Am I just better at understanding HOS cuz I'm a nerd? Cuz most of this stuff seems simple to me and I don't have a ton of experience.

I think it has more to do with ego. Some people simply cannot be wrong and learning new stuff means they were wrong about what they thought before.
But yes there is that whole right brain / left brain issue that's some can parse stuff like regulations easier than others.

To add - it doesn't matter if the work is "non compensated". Fmcsa doesn't care if you don't get paid for work.

If you’re driving a rental car to orientation technically you’re not employed by the company until you cleared orientation… So technically driving on the rental car you’re off duty…

OK..... while y'all are bickering back and forth about who's interpretation is correct. I got one question..... Who the heck is pulling into a weigh station in a rental car to get inspected and have DMV pull E-Logs?
Doesn't really matter which one of you is correct. It's going to matter what the officer thinks if/when you get inspected.

Reading this thread, a couple things come to mind- 1. Wouldn’t the use of a “free to you” rental car be a form of compensation? What would be the difference between them giving you the car to get to them or cash to use to get to them, In my mind, you are being compensated. 2. You approached/contacted Schneider asking for employment (yes, they do advertise seeking employees, but specifically you called the phone number and asked them for a job) and it’s Schneider’s name on the rental car contract, so maybe this would be good opportunity to start learning Schneider’s policies and how to follow them. Simply put, if I am asking someone for a job, they provide me with free transportation to their office and they want me to keep track of my time while I use their transportation ,required by law or not, what’s the big deal if you really want the job?

Where does it say one has to be employed for 395? Every section I remember it says ”at the direction of the motor carrier” or something close to that. Nothing about being employed.

Actually it's more for liability than anything. For example a new Schneider driver gets into a fatality on their first week. Schneider can show the court that yes there was time on the clock and the driver has every legal right to be there.

It has no other purpose than that really.
