I want to share an experience in the hopes that maybe it'll help others and honestly if it helps just one person it's worth the time and trouble.
I've been dealing with recurring severe major depression for decades now.
It took me decades, literally, to find medication that works correctly for me.
Everything was going smoothly and then, I don't know if it was pride or what, but I think mostly it was pride, I decided to stop taking the medication and handle it on my own.
That nearly cost me my career as a driver, nearly cost me my wife, and it nearly cost me my life.
I don't give a s*** anymore what anybody says about you know they can call me names med boy people can make fun of you all that s*** but at the end of the day it's about quality of life and it's about can you function in society and can you be productive in society.
Without these medications I cannot do these things.
Without these medications I cannot be a productive member of society: I could live on disability and that's not in my game plan.
Just in case anyone's curious, I'm fully above board with all this: I've got the DOT forms for my medications, my doctor is on board with it all, the company is aware what's going on, I mean it's all above board and it's perfectly legal and none of my medications are in violation of the prohibited substances.
It's all good, and ***that's the whole point***, is that here I have the ability to do something to help me be productive and my pride sometimes gets in the way and that is just ridiculous.

What people would think kept me from getting on antidepressants. Bad move. They don’t solve your problems but they sure do help.
Congrats for learning. I’m glad you got on track and hope you can stay that way.TooTiredToTalk, Brettj3876, tscottme and 4 others Thank this. -
Don’t regret a thing. Mistakes aren’t always mistakes at all. It’s how we truly learn. The hard way! Keep doing what you’re doing !!!

The best friend I ever had was on meds for depression. Viet Nam combat vet with diagnosed PTSD from the VA.
He took his meds every day. He got to feeling really good and balanced and he thought he was okay.
He quit taking his meds.
Two weeks later he parked his truck in the yard, took his Glock out of the glove box and shot himself in the head.
If you need meds, get them.
If you have meds, take them.Accidental Trucker, Goldenfan, Concorde and 14 others Thank this. -
Good deal. Only an idiot would criticize someone for taking medicine.

I think it's more about what's causing the depression, than the actual remedy for it. In the past, people that were depressed, either lived with it( and affected everyone around them) or changed their life accordingly. I'm by no means advocating anything, but it's the main reason people, that don't have access to healthcare, turn to "other" forms for relief. Who's to say, taking "legal" meds is any better than someone who uses not so legal ones? I'm sorry, as TTR's "wet blanket", I don't buy it. I'm not any happier knowing someone is on anti-depressants, AND DRIVING A SEMI, that's okay,,,and someone drummed out of the industry for smoking a bowl 3 weeks ago. If you have to take meds to "function in our society", something is drastically wrong with the way you are living.

One problem with depression especially major depression is that the causes are not clear.
We're not talking about working on a 5 horse Briggs n Stratton, where you can see that the air filter is dirty or you can check the oil on a dipstick that's not how the human won't mind works.Last edited: Mar 8, 2022
