Okay guy's, I've got a few places that are going to want me to do a road test here soon, just waiting on the phone calls as i was told to do. first off I'll say these are jobs I probably dont deserve with my limited exp, but was lucky enough to have good interviews with both places. The one is driving class B rolloff scrap truck, the other tractor trailer pulling 3 axle specialty trailers, but they're only 35 feet long. I've never been on a road test before, so that makes me somewhat nervous, but my questions are as follows, should I do a pre-trip? how much will the trailer having three axles affect my turning, compared to two? If the one company's truck is an 18 speed, can I get away with only splitting the high side? (never drove an 18 speed). Thanks guys.

Congrats and good luck. The road test itself will be just like any other, follow the rules of the road, be mindful of traffic and road conditions. Go into it with the mindset that you will absolutely pass without question.

Absolutely dot he pre-trip, they are checking to make sure that you know what your doing.

Well I darn sure do! :biggrin_2559:
been off work way too long, 1 year and I've been looking this whole time. I was applying everywhere, even at mechanic and laboring jobs (my past experience).

I always ask if they want a pre-trip. I've done plenty of road tests where the tester was in a hurry and said forget the pre-trip. I once did a road test bobtailing around the block! One company had a printed route and said to me to follow this route and not say a word until the test was done. An 18 speed can be split in each gear, so, just split what is needed as you go, depending on whether loaded or not.

Thanks guy's. My only question that is still lingering, will the trailer having 3 axles affect how it turns? how much weight does that extra axle allow for?

It is simple an philosophy of mine or should I say one of my philosophy's are.....
The only stupid question is the one that is not asked......
Address your concerns with the tester....
Ask if a pre trip will be necessary ?
Let him / her know that you have never handled a three axle.....
Drive the truck like you own it.....
Personally if I ever have to couple the tractor and trailer I always get out prior to coupling usually like 6" to a foot before contact hook up the air lines and electrical then latch on....
It just looks good for your self.....
As far as the eighteen speed.....
Do not let it psych you..... Just let the trainer know and he / she will assist you on what they want to see you do and how to do it....

How deep into the pretrip should you get? Just walk around like you did with DMV, or get into it & check slack adjusters & u joint play? Do do you just check fluids, hit the headlights, 4 ways, walk around make shure they are working & go? I am just out of school, & may have a shot at a local job, for a small comapny, & don't wanna blow it ya know.
