Self certifying means that you enter your physical info, including the doctors DOT number on your own, and include a digital copy of the card you have signed by the physician. It is not you just saying that you are fit to drive....

You need to self certify, every time you renew. Unless your classified as exempt Intrastate.

You can’t self certify without having a current Physical. What you can do, is switch it to Exempt Intrastate only. I guess that could be considered self certifying also. Keeps you from forfeiting your CDL. If they haven’t downgraded you already. Better do it ASAP. It’s free, done over Internet. Insurance doesn’t cover DOT physicals. Most cover a regular annual physical. That’s different.

For state to state info go to fmcsa.gov and do a search for “medical card”.

The Laws been in effect for at least 5-6 yrs. Each issuing State is responsible for keeping track. DOT officers in any State see your status when they run your CDL License.

Unless something changed, I had my Wisconsin CDL for years with no health card.( 2007-2017) When I moved to Colorado, the DOT dude said for $8 bucks, I could transfer my CDL and made no mention of a health card. I was aware, anytime one crosses a state line, a health card is required, but in Wis., intrastate one was not needed unless specified by the company.

Then changed it back, downloading a copy of my Card. Michigan website now says it’s no longer an option. Have to get a Intrastate K License. That’s something new.

I've been paying for mine for years. I live in Jackson Mi and it's less than $100. Don't even need an appointment, just call ahead to make sure the DOT Doc is in the clinic before you go.

    Weird,

I am set up interstate exempt. Renewed license last August and Was never asked for a current copy at the DMV. medical has expired since Sept. I guess I better get it in gear.

I only road test once it a great while so I’m not on the road hardly ever. I only ever remember showing it when I originally got my license.
