Personally, I think if they were serious about safety they’d be better off slowing everyone down a bit and adding an hour or two to the day.......You can’t tell me that people need 10 hours of sleep or downtime every day. I’d go insane sitting in my bunk for 10 hours every day. But I’ve always had more time than money, so that’s probably colored my opinion a bit

Doesn’t have anything to do with poor planing when I’m pcing to a store or laundry mat while waiting for a load. They are making rules to enforce the rules already in place.

The purpose of the 10 hour break was to make it easier to get 8 hours of sleep plus minor other things like eating, brushing teeth, shower without rushing like a mad man or be tempted to do those while driving. I can tell the difference between days I get 8 hours of sleep and days I get 7 hours and 15 minutes. If I get back-to-back sub-8 hours of sleep I'm could be near Rage-Level 5 before I put on my socks. People have differing needs for sleep with 8 hours just being a fairly average physiological need. It doesn't mean you are required to sleep that long or that you can't get by with less than that. But routinely getting less sleep than you need, whatever that individual need is, increases several health problems including weight gain, problem blood-sugar, high blood pressure, plus irritability. One way to find out what your individual need for sleep is to find a time when you are getting regular and adequate sleep and then sleep until you wake up, not because of an alarm or another disturbance. Ideally you want to ween yourself from caffeine before you do the experiment. And you want to run the experiment a few times to see if the number you think you need keeps being the number you get over a few days. Many people are so sleep deprived or they have a schedule where they are only allowed X amount of hours and that's too bad. Neither of those keeps your body from having higher BP, blood sugar, weight gain, etc. If you aren't getting enough sleep it is going to harm you. Trucking is such an unstable day that often getting the sleep you need, but at the wrong time reduces the benefits from the sleep itself.

But what if you drop the trailer and bobtail home? You should be able to use it for that

I don't have a "terminal". I park the truck at home when I'm home. So why is not ok to use PC to go home?

You're like me. Your home is your "terminal". Once you leave the house, that starts your trip. Regardless if you stay out two days, and cover one load, or if you stay out two months, and cover thirty loads, it's all one trip. So leaving your last drop and going home (your terminal) is "continuation of the trip".

The trip began when you left your house, and it only ends when you get back to your house.

The wording is"normal work reporting location" or something close to that. Terminal is just a shorthand.

Gotta love the DOT officers that "know" the rules. My coworker got a ticket for unsecured load because he didn't have 2 straps in the first 10 feet. He had 5 on a 40 ft load, but because the officer apparently trained at a mega he didn't know the actual law. I would be spitting mad about that and would never let it go, but the coworker just went on with his day with points on his record that didn't belong there.
