series 60 ddec5 problem is when fuel gets to a little over 1/4 tank engine starts to run rougher and as the fuel gets lower it gets worse. this happens at idle and all rpms and it seems to have less power. when u fill up over 1/2 tank everything goes back to normal and the power comes back. have checked tank while its low with a clean rag and stick swabbed on bottom of tanks and found nothing. ive also checked filter to try to see air bubbles and dont see any and numerous fuel filter changes makes no difference. while the fuel is lower when the boost gauge comes up the needle shakes if that helps any and when over 1/2 tank the needle is stable. things point to a fuel tank problem or pickup. has anyone seen this problem before.

The only thing that makes sense to me with the symptoms you are having during the specific conditions you have stated is a pin hole in the fuel pick up tube.
When the fuel tank gets to a specific level it exposes the pin hole in the pick up tube and air is drawn into the system causing poor running conditions.

If that’s in a Kenworth truck I’d almost guarantee it’s one of the pick ups. My 90’s models and my ‘05 have all had them changed at least once over hairline cracks in the tubes.

Can it be a weak pickup pump and not enough weight of fuel at that level to help push up the tube?

How much of a pain is it to change out the tubes? Did you have to drop the tanks?

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.

Changing mine were easy. The 90’s models all mount their tanks right back ahead of the drives so there’s nothing above them. The ‘05 is a 72” Aero with the tanks behind the exhaust. That one I had to loosen the straps and roll the tank a bit to get them out, but the tanks stayed on the frame.

    Rideandrepair and LameMule Thank this.

thanks all i will investigate the pickup tubes. talked to the dealer in town and they said the tubes are part of the tank, kinda hard to believe. if the tubes arent removable i will patch them, maybe put a sleeve over them. its a 2005 century dual 120 tanks

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.

I just picked up a set for a 99' Kenworth today. Grabbed a return splitter valve just for good measure.
I've been having similar issues as OP at lower fuel levels. 20220411_173659.jpg
