Breaking In New Truck

Did you read the engine’s owner manual?

 

I’ve had a couple new trucks. Seemed to me that around 80k things started to do better. Mpg etc
Maybe it’s a setting from the factory to retard things??
Also from what I’ve heard. The harder you run them out of the gate. The better they’ll run long term
That’s hearsay not fact

 

Modern emissions engines run hot, and of they don't you will have problems with those emissions systems.

From the manual for the 2010 emissions ISX

Forcing a modern engine to run cold will result in a negative impact on fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and will result in more frequent DPF blockage and cleaning.

 

I have the same setup and your oil temp is normal.
The 18spd I have currently and in my previous 2 trucks (1 had 750k miles) never “loosened up”. Don’t expect it to either unless you beat the crap out of it.
You can make up-shifting smoother in the bottom gears by turning off the Jake…especially helpful when you are loaded heavy.

 

Don't idle that new engine for long time like when sleeping at night. I would idle it 3-5 minutes to get oil to everything and cooling down 3-5 minutes idle before turning off engine. I would be gentle on cold engine till it warms up. I would probably change engine oil at 5,000 or 6,000 miles. Some do it sooner and some don't do it at all. If it was my truck I would want to get most of first couple thousands wear in metal plus anything from when engine was put together out of the oil. Their is no magic number, probably more depends on if it your truck or company truck.

I know Detroit Diesel engines have bypass oil filter. So they go 50,000 between oil change. I don't know if Cummins has one. If not you might change new engine oil at 3,000 miles, but no real hard number just kinda what you want to do, if it's your truck.
