hello, sorry if any of this has been discussed before, I've been searching everywhere on here and haven't seen any answers for my situation. i recently bought a 2001 Pete 379 with a 6NZ Cat, 18 Speed, 3:58 rears, 24.5LP it was a tri axle but i had them remove the 3rd axle and wet kit as i didn't need it for reefer hauling, this is the first cat I've ever owned, I've mainly stayed with N14s most of my driving career as i can rebuild them blindfolded at this point, this CAT seems to be a whole other ball game, they said it had around 370k on platinum overhaul kit, bigger radiator, full tilt manifold and BorgWarner turbo and is set/tuned for 650hp. The main concerns i have is making sure everything is running normal for the engine specs, this thing pulling wise is crazy from every 525 N14 I've ever owned including the one in my 98 Pete, 80k this thing doesn't sweat many hills, here is the questions,

Oil Psi- Idle 750rpm at temp is around 40-45psi, 900rpm(overnight/extended) around 55-60psi, running down the road 1400-1500rpm 65-70psi(on hard pulls will sometimes come down 3-5psi at full engine load)
Water temp- 195-200F running down the road (depending on outside temps) will get to 220F on long pulls in which case i back out of it to keep it from getting to hot.(also run engine fan from start to finish on all long pulls to help cooling) also when i bought it i had a new thermos installed and CAT called for a 98C/208F
Pyro Temp- normally stays around 650-750F down the road, pulls will get around 875F Hottest I've seen is 900 maybe 925F
Turbo/Manifold Psi- normal pulls rolling hills on cruise it might hit 33-36psi long pulls/steep mountains it will easily pop up to 42-43psi(gauge maxs at 45psi) but i try to keep backed out of it to keep it under 38psi.

these are the things I'm wondering are normal for this engine, so far I've been very impressed with performance just wanting to make sure everything is safe/normal ranges, MPG has been great but not to worried about it 4.8-5.4 depending if i have to idle or not, its around 290WB with the bigger 70" sleeper, also last oil change i had cat pull an oil sample for analysis to check things internally but haven't got results back yet.

again sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, i just wasn't able to find it with this engine and modification setup, thank you in advance for any help or advise.

It all looks good. I would turn on the fan before you pull a hill. I didn’t let mine get over 200.

yeah i always kick the fan on before a big pull, Sherman between Laramie and Cheyenne is the only one i had to back out of it to keep cool even with the fan on going east

If you idle, kick it up where the oil pressure reads 60 psi. Run the overhead every year, at least I did.

Those numbers are all way cool. Cats run best when they’re warmed up. At 80,000gross you couldn’t possibly load that engine enough to get it really hot unless you were off road with it somewhere. The Cat software is like the mechanical governor. It won’t fuel right up if it doesn’t need to. You could hook 120,000 to it and it would probably go just as fast as it does at 80k. And still have more in it at that. It would just run a little hotter. My 5EK’s run 210-215 at cruise and 220-225 pulling long grades at 140,000gross. They’re ok running warm if they hold 58psi or more of oil pressure. The important thing is don’t get it hot or cool it off too fast. That’s when you get into head gasket issues.

Looks great! I wouldn't be afraid to run boost pressure up to 45 or more even

Why would you do that? It’s just warmed up at 200. Never mind what the gauge says, there’s a little ####ery there. These things aren’t 3406’s, you don’t have to get ahead of it with the manual switch, the fans not going to come on at 205. An E model or C15 ecm doesn’t trip the fan until 218. I’ve got 2 5EK’s and a BXS and they all run over 200 all the time. In the summer it’s not strange to see them up closer to 230 in the mountains.

I’m glad it works for ya. 200 suites me find. The way I had it tuned, it would crawl up pretty quick. I never liked the fan kicking in (Horton) at peaked torqued, causes more stress. I took care of my 5EK when I had it. Even on my Com a part I turn the fan on before it reaches 200.;)

So how do you keep the coolant from boiling inside the block and head once you get over boiling point ? Thus allowing air pockets or cavitation to happen And thus cracking heads etc ?

The coolant system is under pressure. Every PSI equals an additional three degrees to boiling point. So at sea level, a 15psi cap brings you up to 257 degrees. And that's just on straight water.

AModelCat and Last Call Thank this.
